castles from Fussen or Reutte

We're planning to visit the castles from either Fussen or Reutte in May. Am curious about timing and which place is nicer to stay. We will be coming from Stuttgart. I see that the first tour is at 9 but need to arrive an hour earlier to pick up tix. Anyone drive there from either Fussen or Reutte? Also, approximately how much time did you spend there?? Is parking difficult early in the day?

Thanks so much.

We stayed in Fuessen twice. Loved the old town. We stayed at the Hotel zum Hechten both times. Easy 10 minute drive to Neuschwanstein. Spent close to 3 hours with both tours. Go to Tegelberg afterwards and ride the Sommerrodelbahn, luge ride.

We also stayed in Fussen. We arrived the day before so we took a test drive to the castles and checked out the parking lot Situation Rick described in his book. It was a short and very scenic drive.

We took a public bus to/from Neuschwanstein while spending the night in Fussen. Easy. No parking problems.

We stayed at the Gastof zum Schluxen in Pinswang when we visited the Castles. It was so long ago I don't remember how long it took us to drive, but it seemed insignificant at the time. We also spent a day exploring the Ehrenberg ruins from there. I don't know if they still do, but the RS family best of Europe stayed there while we were there. We had no difficulty parking. I had bought our tickets in advance. After we were done seeing the castle we went and rode the summer luge very near to Neushwanstein. We were done with both castles and the luge ride by early afternoon.

Do as Laura suggested, or you can walk it in under an hour. Parking was 8 euros about 5 years ago, that early in the day should be no problem. It's a long way from Stuttgart to specifically see those two castles, are you spending further time in the area? If you like hiking you can spend the whole day just in Hohenschwangau - 2 castles, museum, long lunch, walk up the hill, walk around the lake. If not, Fussen is a very pretty town.

We’re spending two nights in Stuttgart cause we’re Porsche owners so we’re visiting the factory and museum. Then driving to Füssen to begin driving north. Castles then three nights in Munich, to Dachau, then 2 nights in Rothenburg, 2 nights in Nuremberg then 2 nights in Frankfurt.
