I will be in Germany for a few weeks on business and have a few days to burn. We will be going from Stuttgart to Munich for a few days in July. I am looking for a castle hotel either on the way to Munich or within a hour or so drive around Munich. If not a castle a nice "boutique" type place. Any suggestions would be welcome.
This castle is on the way (sort of) from Stuttgart to Munich. It might be the only authentic, never destroyed castle, on that route. It dates from the 13th century. And there is a hotel attached to the castle.
I had to think about this one long and hard, and I could only remember one castle hotel that I saw in all of Bavaria, Burg Rabeneck... and this one's located far from Munich, buried deep within the Fränkische Schweiz (Franconian Switzerland- despite the name, it looks nothing like Switzerland to me) region NE of Nürnberg. I couldn't even find the hotel's website (if it has one) or even anything about it in English. I'm sure there must be others closer to Munich, but I just don't know of any.
Now, if you continue beyond Stuttgart in the opposit direction of Munich down the beautiful Neckar River Valley, you would have a hard time doing much better than Schlosshotel Hirschhorn.
Burg Colmberg is about 2.5 hours from Munich and about 2 hours from Stuttgart, not far from Ansbach. A detour from the direct route between Stuttgart and Munich for sure but maybe not so terrible.

Tripadvisor reviews are very positive.
Castle Veldenstein is very close to Nuremburg. We've stayed there, and it was very nice.
