Carry on luggage on United Airlines

After a two week vacation to Italy in 2018 with only carry on bags, we have become true believers in packing light for Europe. We also are big on not checking a bag and sitting at the baggage carousel waisting precious time. However, we are trying to book a flight to Frankfurt on United/Lufthansa and we are told we must check. They are only allowing a personal item that fits under the seat or overhead bag of 18 lbs or less. Does that sound right? Is there another airline that allows regular carry ones?

That sounds like the conditions of a bare-bones "basic economy" fare. Look at the price differential to a 'regular economy fare and check its luggage rules.

Yup, on Lufthansa you'll have to check unless you are ultra-light. I also like KLM and Air France and BA. My choices so I can carry on. Though I usually check on the way home cuz I've got some olive oil or wine!

The size rules are for Lufthansa flights, not United flights. This was one reason when I booked my economy class flights for September I didn't consider any codeshare flights and never any basic economy seats. I'm sure others will disagree with my thinking. I also booked refundable tickets because for $200 RT it added to my comfort zone.

Ok thanks. This is helpful. We travel with the RS backpack style carryons and the crossover body personal bags. We traveled Norwegian air for Italy with no issues but don’t want to end up checking at the gate if we are over the limit for United

I agree that it's due to Lufthansa rules. I'm having the same problem with my Delta flight to Berlin - I have a layover at CDG and then transfer to an AirFrance flight, which means I'm bound by AF carry-on requirements. My carry-on is a bit over their size limits, so I will be checking it. I'm actually fine with it - it will be much less of a headache not to carry it around CDG during the layover.
