We'll be taking a train from Munich to Salzburg, would like to rent a car in Salzburg, keep it during our stay there, then drive to Mittenwald and use car there, and then drop it off before taking train back to Munich from Mittenwald. Would ideally only use the car for country roads in areas around Salzburg and Mittenwald. What would be car rental locations where we could pick up car and not have to drive in Salzburg. Also have the problem of picking up car in Austria and dropping off in Germany - can't do that. Is there a place in Austria near Mittenwald (is Innsbruck closest) to drop off car and then take a cab or bus to either Mittenwald or Garmisch so can take train back to Munich? We're trying to avoid too much city driving and traffic. I'd also appreciate any car rental location recommendations. Very nervous about driving in Europe.

There are at least a couple car rental agencies within in 1-2 blocks of the Salzburg train station. Suggest you check on costs
from Kemwell (a U.S. company). These days most rentals that include a drop off in another country require an additional and
often HIGH drop off fee. I can recommend a couple hotels that have simple & sometimes free parking with about a 15 min.
walk to the center of town. Both on Rupertgasse - Hotel Jedermann & Bergland Hotel. Gasthaus Ganslhof, 1 block further
is also a good option. (We stayed here summer 2017) Enjoy

To avoid the steep drop off fee, you could rent the car in Freilassing, which just a few km outside Salzburg in Bavaria; it's well connected by bus and train. The rental rate should be a bit lower than in Austria but you will have to add the Austrian motorway vignette (€9 for 10 days).
