Car Rental CDW Insurance Through Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Hi,

I am planning to rent a car for three weeks from Berlin. I have booked the car rental through National. In the past, anywhere I have traveled I declined CDW from the car rental and have relied on my CC (I have always been comfortable doing that).

My reservation has a basic CDW included with the price. It's displayed under "Extras" as "CDW-ALLOCATED INCLUSIVE". I did not get an option to select it or remove it. This has a deductible of around 950 Euro. If I pay for comprehensive CDW it will cost me extra.

I am trying to understand if I decline the comprehensive CDW at the time of car pick-up, do I still get the CDW coverage from my credit card even though a basic CDW is already included?

Thank you in advance for replies.

As long as you decline any insurance that was optional, the coverage from Chase is in play. If some level is required/included in your basic rate and you can’t waive it, Chase insurance will still be in effect.

Ensure that you have valid driving permission for Germany, sometimes driving license alone is not enough. This is not checked by rental car company. If in case of accident it is written in police report that you did not have permission I assume no CDW will pay anything.

I hope you do not plan to cross-border by car to Poland. Otherwise better ask explicitely if this is covered 1) by rental contract and 2) by CC CDW. Reason: Breakdowns or accidents are also faked in order to steal vehicles (source is travel advice by German embassy: "Um Fahrzeuge zu entwenden, werden auch Pannen oder Unfälle vorgetäuscht.").
