Car in Munich: Question for Munich-savvy types

An acquaintance of mine has 3 nights booked for his family within 1 km of Munich Central station in the Neuhausen area and has asked for planning advice. Travel goals during their stay include Dachau, BMW-World and Museum, and other things yet to be determined, presumably within the city since no outings other than Dachau have been mentioned. The family plans to arrive by car in Munich and drop it at the central station... but not until the morning after their 3rd night in the city, when they board a train in Munich for Switzerland at Munich Central.

I am no Munich expert, so I thought I'd toss this plan out there for comment. My gut says, "Drop the car upon arrival" so as not to incur traffic issues, parking fees, rental and insurance costs, and other expenses. Transport to Dachau and the Olympia-Stadion U-bahn stop for BMW don't look problematic to me. But I haven't spent any time in Munich since the early 2000's. Are there grounds for using a car within Munich for these destinations, or other popular destinations that they might come up with between now and August?

We made the same mistake your friend is planning, except we were leaving from Munich airport after staying in central Munich for 3 nights. During those 3 nights, the car sat in the hotel garage the entire time. We took the train to Dachau with no problem. None of the other places mentioned will be a challenge to get to via train. Driving around Munich is a nightmare, so the train will be faster and less stressful. No need for the added expense of extra days rental and parking fees. Thankfully the train station is a straight shot off the 2R, so not too much driving is needed in the city.

A car in Munich will be a money pit and NOT needed.

Dachau is easy by Regional train AND bus - or you could use bighattours.com if you want an amazing guide to take you there and teach you SO much. We used him in December for Dachau and a Third Reich History tour of Munich and he is one of the best guides we've ever had. We are hiring him again for this upcoming December. If you buy the RS Munich guidebook, there is also suggestions in his book on how to get to those places.

They won't need a car in Munich and Dachau. It will only be a burden.

Your gut feeling is correct, your friend is doing a big mistake. All those places are easier to reach by public transportation. Having a car for the entire stay just means paying rental fees and parking to have a car sit and collect dust.

Depending on where they are coming from it might be easier to drop the car at the airport to avoid driving in Munich.

I regularly stay with my car outside Munich in Feldkirchen (east of town near the A99/A94 junction).

Driving into Munich, and I am sure having a car in Munich IS A BEAR.

Parking it is another consideration and one worthy of concern.

Then there is the inner ring road. More than once I have found using it causes me to have fewer hairs on my head than when I started.

Munich has a fabulous transport system.

Driving in Munich is something for snobs or beer-truck drivers. I only do it when I'm fetching beer, pardon: books, in large quantities. Otherwise, the car stays in Geltendorf, at the end of the S4. And with the €49 ticket, train travel becomes free, so to speak.

Your gut is correct. The car will just stay parked the whole time.

The two guides I met in Munich didn’t have a car and never need it. Unless you want to pay 25euros a night don’t bother.

I will add to the don’t have the car for the three nights they are in Munich chorus. We have been to Munich many times and only two times arrived by car as part of a longer trip. It was a hassle driving into Munich, the underground parking garage was difficult to find, the payment system was hard to figure out and the pull in spots were impossibly small with lots of concrete columns to squeeze between. And the parking fees just add up for a car they will not need. Even better than dropping the car at the train station (they are doing a major, years’ long renovation) would be to drop it in the city before Munich and take the train to Munich.

München is one of the only places I take a train to and I have my own cars here. Or, I use Parkhaus P & R Fröttmaning and the U-Bahn. I really do not enjoy driving the Mittlerer Ring and go out of my way to get around München.

I think it is unanimous, Russ. Unusual around here isn't it?
