Just got an email from db and they canceled my train from Dresden to Gdansk in a few weeks. How easy is it to rebook on the website and apply a credit that I hope to get for the canceled trip? Or should I rebook when I land in Frankfurt 6 or so days before that train trip at the help desk? Thanks for your help in advance
Ah, you also got one of those mails that DB sends out as part of their concerted effort to increase the amount of confusion in the world to unseen levels.
Your train may have been cancelled, but your ticket not. What date, and what departure did you book?
Do not try to rebook this online. The DB does not even have a concept of "rebooking". And do not cancel your ticket either.
A train ticket is for a route, not a train, so when a train is cancelled you are supposed to just find yourself another train going the same way, and just get on.
You may want to get new seat reservations and refunds for you old ones. But easiest is indeed to do that at the DB travel centre, eg in Frankfurt.
Dresden to Gdańsk? Is there really a direct train? Or is it a connection somewhere in Poland?
Trains in Poland require seat reservations, don't just hop on. Definitely do not hop on without a seat reservation if one of your connections is an EIP train - you will be hit with a massive fine.
I came back last night from Germany and was confronted with the same alarmistic mails for both the trip going to my destination (2 weeks ago) and the return trip yesterday.
When receiving the first mail, I rechecked my trip on DBahn and saw it was still offered, with only a minor difference: the changeover station was no longer Frankfurt main station but the long distance station at the airport. To be sure I did not overlook anything, I phoned Customer Service and they confirmed that indeed, this was the only difference for my trip.
On the trip back, it was the same - of course, I did not panic anymore, just checked my assumption again.
The reason was that the train to/from my end destination was no longer routed through the main station of Frankfurt, so the obvious change was now the airport station. But they do not explain that in their mails, they just say "your trip is cancelled". So much for German efficiency!
One piece of advice: if any of your trains is late (which happens frequently), ask for the appropriate form as you may qualify for a partial refund if the delay is at least over one hour.
Just go to the DB information booth in Frankfurt while you are there. They should be able to give you a current and valid ticket then.

The OP has a current and valid ticket. So the information booth will just confirm that. However if the OP wants new reservations they can do that.
However, what I see seems to indicate that the best course of action would be to just leave Dresden on an earlier train and aim for the Bus+train combo that matches the originally booked train for the Berlin - Gdansk segment.
When is your travel date? DB notes the rail line between Berlin Ostkreuz and Erkner will be closed July 23 to August 6. That is the route between Berlin and Frankfurt am Oder, on the way to Gdansk. So a route between Dresden and Frankfurt am Oder that bypasses Berlin may be in order.

You don't need a form for this, you can do it easily online in your DB account. I can humbly say that I've had some practice with this by now ;)
Just follow this link:

The train trip is July 18th starting at 9:30 am arrival at 11:32 am
Somehow, I think it will take a bit longer than 2 hours to get from Dresden to Gdansk by rail. An airplane I could believe.
Current schedule shows you taking a city tram to Dresden Neustadt, then a train to Cottbus, then a train to Frankfurt am Oder, then a train to Gdansk Glowny. Dep at 9:42 am and arrive at 6:39 pm, a 9 hour journey.
The arrival is in Berlin . Then we change trains to Frankfurt on de Oder- I think that is how you spell it.
Yes, and that Berlin - Gdanks train is now partly substituted by bus. If you look up Dresden to Gdansk you will see this.
As I see it you have the following options.
- Take an earlier train to Berlin so you can be on the bus that connects with the EC service you originally planned to take.
- Take a later combination of trains. You will need new reservations (but not tickets_
- Take an alternative route. You may need o have your ticket endorsed for that route though.
For the first option you do not need to do anything, for the other two you may want to pay a visit to a ticket office.
Or you cancel your ticket for a full refund and look for a flight...
What train did you have reservations for on the Berlin - Gdanks section?
Actually I think this is a good option:
- Take a train from Dresden Neustadt via Cottbus to Frankfurt a/d Oder. Time it so that there you board the EC to Gdanks you have a reservation for. For this you do not need to do anything, Your ticket is subject to German rules till the border, and those allow you to take any reasonable alternative route if needed. Then from the border onwards you will be on the route and trains you originally booked.
WengenK. Thanks for the info. We are going to use your suggestion and skip the train from Dresden to Berlin. We will go to the help desk in the Frankfurt airport train station or the train station in Nuremberg a day or two before we leave for Dresden.
You can go to the travel centre. There they can give you a new reservation if you decide to aim for a later EC to Gdansk. For the regional trains to Frankfurt a/d Oder there are no reservations, and no need to change your ticket.
But don't waste to much time on this, as it is not strictly needed.
