I'm looking for some advice on how i can fit Gengenbach into my travel plans. I will be exploring the rhine river before this and was originally planning to go from Boppard to Offenburg and use that as my base for Gengenbach. And then from Offenburg go to either Rothenburg or Bamberg (planning to do them both so whatever connection makes sense). Then onwards to Dresden.
However, after looking at the transport options, travelling by train seems to be a nightmare in and out of offenburg with at least 2 transfers in each direction. I will have a large suitcase with me so this is not ideal. Are there more direct options into Offenburg? If not, is there any interesting place between Boppard and Offenburg I can stop at for one night to give me a better travel route (ie less transfers) to Offenburg the next day?
Departing from offenburg, I was thinking of using Wurzburg as my base for both Rothenburg and Bamberg. Are there any other similar candidates i can consider? My next stop after this will be dresden.
