Business Trip to Frankfurt - Weekend Free

Almost 35 years ago I left Nürnberg, where I had lived and worked for American Express during my early 20's. I returned to the States and went on with life - college, career, family. I returned to Germany for the first time in 2017, spending two weeks on a wonderful vacation, traveling all over the country with my husband and daughter; during that trip we did not make it back to Nürnberg. Now I have business that takes me to Frankfurt for a week. I arrive in Frankfurt the weekend before my work obligations (28 Sep) and have two days free without any plans. I will stay on the weekend after my work week with my friend/co-worker near Stuttgart (5 - 6 Oct).

In trying to decide where to go during my free weekend I am considering taking the train to Nürnberg for a little nostalgia trip Saturday 28 Sep directly from the Frankfurt airport (found the DB schedules and created an account online!).

Before I book Nürnberg, is there any other place I might consider a bit closer to Frankfurt? We have already stayed on the Rhine and visited Köln. Is Mainz worth a visit? I love wandering around old city centers and churches.

Thanks in advance!

If it was me, I would certainly go back and visit the city I had lived in for so many years.

Yes, Mainz is worth seeing. You could spend a day visiting the 1000-year-old Dom, going to St. Stephens to see the beautiful Chagall windows, and depending on your interests you could go to the Gutenberg Museum or see the Isis Temple ruins.

Other nearby towns that might be of interest would be Marburg, Limburg, Büdingen & Gelnhausen, Idstein or Seligenstadt and all are just an hour train ride outside of Frankfurt using the local transportation - RMV.
During your week in Frankfurt, if you are looking for a place to go in the evening, you might want to head over to the neighborhood of Höchst in the far west side of the city. Ancient church, Schloss with dry moat, lots of half-timbered houses and great food sitting in the old market place.

There are many wonderful places closer than Nürnberg but would you get more out of them. I was stationed in both Würzburg (1970's) and Nürnberg (1980's) decades ago. It still feels a bit like going home to visit them. Good luck with your choices. By ICE train you can be there in 2 hours.

Nürnberg it is! Booked the train tickets using the DB site.
Now it's off to search and possibly create a post re: hotels.

Thanks so much!
