Burg Rheinfels tour options & St Goar daytrip query

Hi,

Burg Rheinfels
I wonder which of the 2 tours offered in Burg Rheinfels is better suited for 2hours time? From what I know, there are 2 tours offered, one is through the castle w/ the Museum & arms and the other is outer route along the fortification.

  1. Does the outer route along the fortification have difficult track?
  2. I am interested w/ the tunnels but not so much with the Museum. Which one of the tour that offers the tunnels experience? According to RS' article, the tunnels are 600feet long w/ height no more than deep crouch. Does this mean we have to crawl all the way those 600feet tunnels? I initially thought that the tunnels are separated each way so we could visit one or two of the tunnels. We might not have the time and energy to crawl 600 feet all the way lolz.

St. Goar Town
1. could we view Burg Katz and Maus from St. Goar village below? from gmap, i think we could see Burg Maus from Rheinfels but Katz not so much?
2. I'd like to see the Lorelei Statue from St. Goar without having to take the cruise. Is it possible? I read the original Lorelei statue is on the peninsula. Check on gmap, it should be across a camping field. Is this correct?

cheers

I have never seen a museum at Burg Rheinfels, though the website lists it. Have been there about 15 times too!. We just pay our money and go exploring, though they do offer tours that explain the history. I have also never crawled through any tunnels, we just walk through them.

The Loreley is a bit underwhelming. It is a small statue on a spit of land and the cliff itself is just a big hill. It isn't something I would go out of my way to go see, but the ships all pass by. If they don't tell you what you are looking at, you would pass right by it. You cannot see the statue from St. Goar.

You can walk through St. Goar in about 10 min. There isn't much to see, unless you enjoy old churches and then you can easily spend 30 min. or so at the one by the train station.

Do consider a cruise from Rüdesheim or Bingen down to St. Goar. It is well worth the time and money and you will see so many castles!

Hi Ms Jo
Thanks for the info. Yes, the St Goar town is so small. Do the eateries open more than 6pm? I read that most of the shops close at 6pm, we plan to have dinner in St Goar and worries they all be closed when we head down from the castle.

Is Rheinfels worth the 2hour time or better visit Bacharach or Oberwesel town?

Cheers

I just got a reply from Burg Rheinfels that the booby trap tunnels could not be visited. Is this new? I still could see the articles from RS and reviews from Trip Advisor that it still open to public and part of the outer route of the castle.

just got another reply, apparently one of the booby trap is closed but the rest still could be wandered around. hmm why did the guy previously say it's closed and not allowed for visit. I forward him the link from RS article that details the booby traps tour then he said otherwise.

Cheers

Jen, We spent 5 nts in St Goar last fall & had no problem finding open restaurants/cafes in the evenings.

There is a museum in Burg Rheinfels - I think you entered to the right by an herb garden as part of the museum was the castle's pharmacy/apothecary. I was also impressed by a mock up of a dining room & by a library chair/stool which the museum guide showed us. There was also a lot of historical information that I wasn't as interested in. I didn't do a tour, just wandered on my own.

Jo is right that you can't see the Lorelei statue from St Goar proper but it's easily visible across from the camping park about a 10 minute walk along the river path toward Oberwesel. She's right that it's small & could be overlooked but "'LORELEI" was painted in big white letters on the mountain just above river level & the statue was on the small spit of land to the left. It really is a bit of a let down.

Enjoy your trip!

Burg Katz is RIGHT across from St. Goar. Burg Maus is further downstream but still visible from town.
In summer there will be restaurants open in the evening. My favorite (Alla Fontana, Italian restaurant on Pumpengasse) stays open until 22:00 (closed Mondays however.) But there will be several other options in town as well.
There is indeed a small museum at Rheinfels.
The Landgraf terrace restaurant in the hotel next to Rheinfels castle has a fantastic setting - see photo.
