Burg Eltz from bonn

Hi

A friend and I are going to bonn for a night in sept
The day we ge there we plan to explore cologne
The next day we wanna go to Burg Eltz
Could someone recommend the best way to check out Burg Eltz from bonn?
And are there any travel passes for Germany we could buy and save money on trains?

What day of the week would that be? There are buses from Hatzenport station on Saturday and Sunday, otherwise it is a hike from Moselkern station.

As far as passes go, a 2 person Rheinland-Pfalz ticket is valid after 9 am weekdays, will cost 29 EUR and cover the regional trains from Bonn Hbf to Moselkern and return. Current schedule, leave at 9:27 and and arrive at Moselkern at 11:42 after changing trains in Koblenz. It will take about 1 1/2 hours to get there, the last part uphill through the forest on a dirt path, so nothing to consider in rainy weather. Return trains are every hour at 1 past the hour from Moselkern.

Thanks so much for all the details it’s really helpful! One more question is there a way to make the hike easier? Is taxi or Uber an option?

Yes, it covers both of you. Buy it out of a Deutsche Bahn ticket machine. You write both your names in ink on the back of the ticket. Cost is 24 EUR for the first person and 5 EUR for each additional person for up to 5 people traveling together. If you buy at a ticket window, there is a 2 EUR fee. Details here.

Note, even though Bonn is in Nord Rhein-Westfalen, rules allow the ticket to be valid for regional trains heading south to the Rheinland-Pfalz.

When I was looking up trains it mentioned one ICE train and one DB train to get from bonn to moselkern. Is this correct? If so then the card u mentioned will be valid on both? Also any idea if there are any bike rental options around moselkern if we don’t wanna hike for an hour?

Taxi? Maybe. Probably Treis-Karden would be the best place to get a cab.

No. ICE, EC and IC trains are not valid with regional "Laender" tickets. Look up the schedule at www.bahn.com and click the box "Local transport only" and it will show connections with regional trains.

Edit - You could rent bikes in Bonn and take them with you. just be aware that the regional trains contain notes "Number of bicycles conveyed limited". Bike would not work very well on the forest part of the trail, unless it was a specialized mountain bike. But you could ride to the trailhead where there is a small hotel/restaurant and leave them there. Otherwise, you're on roads and the area is quite hilly.

Tried to put that filter on db site but couldn’t find the option :/
So if we go by just local trains it will take longer I suppose compared to ICE?

Thank u so much ur responses have been very helpful? Any rough ide sod how much bike rental would cost? I try to google but almost all sites are in German with no English option :/

Try clicking on "further options" button.

IC train does not get you there any faster really. All the trains from Koblenz along the Mosel are regional trains. So no matter how fast you got to Koblenz, you still have to wait for the regioanle trains to continue the journey. As far as I can see, IC train just lets you leave a little later.

Can this laendar pass be used on trains from bonn to Koln?
Basically we have round trip tickets booked from Leuven to bonn and we leave bonn at 17:00 on a Wednesday
This is the day we’re planning to do Burg Eltz but it looks like too right of a schedule if we take the morning 8:57 train from bonn to moselkern we’ll reach there at 10:57 from there it’s another hour for hiking apparently means around 12 then we only have an hour at the castle in order to catch the 14:00 train back to bonn
I’m having second thoughts now if this should be done.
What else can we see in Bonn?

Bonn to Cologne is a regional network ticket. It is a VRS Preisstufe-4 ticket. You can buy a group day pass (2-5 people traveling together) for 26.50 EUR. That will cover both of you for the entire day including all local transport in Cologne city. Since a single ticket from Bonn to Cologne is 7.90 EUR per person, you can see that the group day pass is the way to go. Buy out of the VRS ticket machines at the station.

I have just checked bonn to tries karden instead of Mosel kern and it’s coming out to be a shorter journey in comparison. Is that correct or am I looking at something wrong? It mentions both RE trains

If you are looking at this coming Wednesday, There is a train replacement bus that goes from Koblenz outside the station front door to Kobern-Gondorf that then connects to a train that is express to Treis-Karden, skipping all the stations, including Moselkern along the way. So yes, it gets there a little sooner.

Sorry not this Wednesday I’m actually going in September so it’s still a little far but September 12th to be exact
But another thing I saw was that tries karden is also further from the castle compared to moselkern.
Is that correct?
And is there any thing else u could suggest to do near to Bonn other than Eltz Castle if it doesn’t work out for me although that is the only reason I’m visiting bonn

Yes, Treis Karden is further from Burg Eltz than Moselkern, but if you wanted to book a taxi, there is a company in Treis-Karden. Small town, so you should arrange in advance.

Another trick to still use a Rheinland Pfalz ticket and leave a little earlier. There is a regional train leaving Bonn Hbf at 8:57 that will get you there by 10:33 after connection in Koblenz. The R-P ticket is not valid until 9:00 am, but you can buy 2 VRS Preisstufe-1b tickets for 2.90 EUR each. These are valid to the Bonn UN Campus where the train stops at 9:00 am, so then the R-P ticket becomes valid. Of course, if you are not staying by the Hbf, you may also want to use those tickets to get from where ever you are in Bonn to the Hbf beforehand.
