Bundestag and Wittenberg same day?

I have booked a 90 minute tour of the Bundestag at 10:30 am on a Friday. Note that the dome, normally climbed after the tour, is closed for maintenance that day.

Can I make a regional train to Luther Wittenberg leaving from Berlin Hbf at 12:30 pm, arriving L. Wittenberg about 2 pm and still have ample time to see the sites?

I wouldn’t say you have ample time but depending on the time of year when the Luther sites are open an additional hour, you could visit the indoor places that interest you first then any outdoor sites, have dinner and head back to Berlin. BTW I saw that there were trains that have a 40+ minute time from Berlin Hbf to Wittenberg. BTW when you arrive at Wittenberg Hbf I’d use a 4 minute taxi to your furthest point/museum and save myself a 20+ walk, working my way back through the rather linear old town to return to the train station by the end of my walking visit.

Thanks, this would be summer hours.

I was planning to do this on the Deutschland ticket at no additional cost hence the regional train. Not sure Wittenberg is worth the $50 x two people to go by ICE train. I also like the flexibility of the RE approach without reservations.

I’m seeing 17-19€ fares each, one way for ICE trains in July. I don’t know your summer dates. I’m not sure the extra time gained in Wittenberg would be to your liking given the inexpensive RE ticket for all day travel but something to consider.

@Tom_MN

If your schedule allows, I'd recommend giving yourself a full day to travel Berlin-Wittenberg and back, and include a few hours walking through town and visiting a number of the sites in Lutherstadt Wittenberg (tourist info, in English).

To get a feel for some of the Luther sites, I'd say:

  • Lutherdenkmal, Melanchthondenkmal : Luther & Melanchthon memorials at the town's market square
  • Lutherhaus : Luther House
  • Melanchthonhaus : Melanchthon House
  • Schlosskirche : Castle Church
  • Stadtkirche St. Marien : St. Mary’s Town Church.

The latter four are part of the town's inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Side note: a number of years ago, I appreciated attending the sunrise service in English at the Protestant ("evangelisch") Castle Church on 31 October which is Reformation Day and a holiday in a number of the northern German states.

If 4 hours is really too short could go day of arrival without sleeping the night before, Arriving BER 7 am.
