Budget for two weeks in Bavaria - Munich and side trips

Hello,

My wife, brother and I will be in Munich from 5th July to explore the city and all the recommended side trips - salzburg, bertchesgaden etc.

We will be there for around 14 days.

Can you please suggest how many euros per person should we budget for under the head food, travel, accommodation.

Thanks!

Charles

You are going to love it!

Your question is sort of hard to answer due to personal preferences and differences in travel styles. For example, we are in Germany right now and our family of 5 ate lunch at a restaurant in town and it was around 55 euro total. But we ate dinner at our apartment from groceries I purchased yesterday. For 70 euro I had purchased food for 2-3 breakfasts and 2 dinners. Yesterday our lunch cost 20 euro because we ate at a sausage stand and only bought sausages and waters. Same with your lodging. Do you prefer luxury or basics? Our apartment near Bamberg is about 90 euro per night. Our apartment in Prague is 200 euro per night. We have rented a car because we got a really good deal and that made it cheaper than train travel for my party of 5. So you will need to examine your travel options.

I am sure somone more wise than me can provide a better answer. I wish you well and hope you have an amazing trip. I recommend Hallstatt as a wonderful side trip and also Jenner Mtn.

My partner and I spent 21 days in southern Germany a few years ago. I'm pretty good at traveling economically, so my experience should be a lower end estimate.

I like to to express my results in euro, not dollars, because I've found the prices in euro to be pretty stable, whereas the dollar to euro exchange rate fluctuates. You can convert this to dollars at the current rate. I also like to express it in nights because the first and last day usually add up to one day, so the number of whole days is the same as nights.

I'm not going to include my expense for seven nights in an apartment in a small town, because most people don't use apartments and if you don't do that, it's unrealistically low. I'm also not including four nights in Munich, where expenses are maybe 20% higher than in small towns. So for the other 10 mights in small towns in southern Germany, we spent about 135 euro per night. That was food, lodging, and transportation for two people, double occupancy. At the exchange rate in effect then, it was $182; it would be less today. Breaking it down, we spent 72,30€/nt for accommodations (with breakfast) 37,43€/nt for food,, and 24,10€/nt for travel.

You probably can't get that low. I get all of my accommodations from town website, which is the least expensive way, and I eat traditional cuisine in local restaurants. I also know the transportation system in Bavaria very well and can take advantage of the best price. But it gives you a minimum to start with.

But if you plan well ahead of time, you can figure most of this out yourself. Book rooms, and you'll know the cost of accommodations. Look up transportation prices on the Bahn website. For meals, I have consistently spent 20€/night/person, average. A good estimate for you might be 30€/pers/nt.

Good luck!

We always budget 100 Euros a day without lodging. Usually this works out well if we don't make big purchases like wine in Italy lol

Do you already have lodging booked? You probably should! Especially if you need 2 rooms or a triple?

We just spent 12 nights in Germany- 3 of those in Munich - our average cost per day was about 160 Euros- hotel, food, transpo, sightseeing- 2 people. However we booked lodging 6-8 months out and got great deals.

Accomodation: I would take the price of one of the major hotels chains, MotelOne, as a reference (a medium priced MotelOne is near Munich East station, prices vary between 60E on weekends up to 90E on weekdays per room, breakfast 11 E./person) and compare it against other chain hotels like Ibis, NH, Holiday Express etc.

Food: Restaurants in the center are a bit overpriced, nontheless you can find a few ones offering reasonable prices (say E15-20 / person for a decent meal and a beer), e.g.: »Ratsstuben« in the town hall, »Weisses Bräuhaus« (alias Schneider Bräuhaus, im Tal), »Pfälzer Weinstuben« in the Residence (being a wine tavern, the menu is rather small but prices are good); near Viktualienmarkt (Reichenbachstrasse) there is the »Deutsche Eiche« (the traditional Munich gay restaurant, heteros welcome); outside the center, a fews steps from the East station there is a true traditional bavarian inn, the "Brünnstein" (Elsässer Strasse), which is, unlike the Hofbräuhaus, Augustiner and other beer halls, not overrun by tourists. If you desperately need to go to a beer hall, I recommend the well known Augustiner or, more quiet, the Hacker house in the Sendlinger Strasse.

Salzburg / Berchtesgaden (Königssee): You cannot do both in a single day trip. If budget is important, I would look for a hotel or a Gasthof not in Salzburg but on the Bavarian side halfways between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden, say Marktschellenberg (stop of the #840 bus to / from Salzburg) or Bischofswiesen (hourly train to Salzburg). Restaurants in the center of Salzburg are expensive, the only budget alternative I know of is the beer garden of the »Sternbräu«. If you have a day ticket for busses go to the main station and ask people for the »Hirschenwirt« (St.-Julien-Str., ca. 300m SW of the station), which offers good qualitiy and good prices.

BTW. The far end of the Königssee (Obersee) is great for hiking (look up these pages: http://www.berchtesgadener-land.com/natur/wandern/wander-touren/seen-klammen/obersee-salet-fischunkel)
