Breaking up the Train Ride between Luxembourg and Berlin

A few days ago, I watched a travel show on PBS (not RSE) about Berlin, and now I want my next trip to include a few days in Berlin. We will be taking the train from Luxembourg. My husband and I love train travel and could do the 8 1/2 hour trip in a day, BUT, I am also thinking about a good place to stop along the way to break up the trip.

Any suggestions? I am anticipating a trip in September 2019.

When I am looking for an overnight stop between two destinations, I put the start and end points into the route planner on Bahn.de and look at the options. In this case, it looks like most trains go via Koblenz and Cologne or Frankfurt, with intermediate stops in places like Cochem, Bacharach, Boppard, and many other towns I am not familiar with. Perhaps someone could advise you as to which might be the most appealing.

Berlin is great and well worth at least 3 nights (more if you have time).

For simplicity, I would look at the trains between Luxembourg City and Berlin, see where you would change anyway - OK, I was curious, just did. Looks like you'd change in Koblenz on some routes...or Frankfurt. Or Saarbrücken, Mannheim, Cologne... Any of those places sound appealing to you? If you meant spending a night somewhere, Koblenz puts you on either the Mosel Valley or the Rhine, so you could detour down one of the rivers for a night on one of the little towns there. Koblenz eats up only about two hours though.

I know Lola. I watched that show on PBS and a light went on! Art and World War II are two my favorite things. I can't believe it took me this long to consider Berlin!

If you wanted to stop somewhere like Erfurt or Eisenach in what Rick calls "Lutherland," it does not add much travel time, but it's much further than half way.

Hi,

If you want someplace in North Germany. ie, a small place, then I suggest Minden an der Weser or Celle. How much of a route deviation do you want to make from Lux. to Berlin?

Thanks Fred. I wanted to break the trip somewhere we would be changing trains on a straight shot. Your suggestions are a bit far afield for my purpose, but they look like places I would really like..
