Braunschweig lodging recommendation

Hi,
Does anybody have a suggestion for places to stay in Braunschweig/Brunswick Germany? We will be spending 2 nights there. I'm interested in Pensions or Air BnB particularly.
Thanks!

Hi KristaF,

First off, let me just say Gute Reise from one Nebraskan to another - GBR!
Upfront, I do not have a good recommendation for a Pension or AB&B; I haven't been to Braunschweig since 2001 (pre-AB&B) so I won't pretend that I know the hot spots, etc.

That said, I think it depends on what you're trying to get out of your Braunschweig trip.

If you're just passing through on your way to bigger tourist destinations like Berlin, Bremen or Hamburg; then (pensions and AB&B aside) I'd recommend choosing a place or one of the hotel nears the Hauptbahnhof (train station) on the SE side, or maybe John F Kennedy Platz, which gets you a little bit into town. TripAdvisor.com is probably the best place to get hotel recommendations in those areas.

If you're actually taking some time to enjoy Braunschweig (do!), then I think a tourist is best served staying on one of the historic Martplatze (marketplace squares), or at least along a strasse leading to one. More generally, anywhere within the bounds of the river Oker means you're within the medieval city walls and likely to experience historical, quaint-but-lively Braunschweig. For me the highlights were Kohlmarkt, Altstadtmarkt, and Heinrichsbrunnen. The problem with these is that Braunschweig is a walking town; you might be annoyed getting in and out if you're only there a short time. Luckily, the entire Innenstadt (old, inner city) is small enough to walk across in an afternoon if you're able. To get a good feel for the whole town, I'd recommend two nights; but that's my strong recommendation for anywhere you go. Less time is just too busy.

I cannot vouch for it, but the Magni hotel came up in a search and looks to be (a) well-reviewed, (b) close to the train station, (c) cute/cozy and (d) in a historic part of town. I'll mention it in case you feel lost in your search, but I in no way can endorse it.

Viel Gluck!

Michael
