Brandenburg an der Havel - possible day trip from Berlin - need advice please

I was looking at possible day trips from BERLIN and I found this town/city : Brandenburg an der Havel. Has anyone been there and if so, can you provide further information please. My time in Berlin is extremely limited so I want to make the best choices.

Thank you!

Brandenburg an der Havel is a sleepy provincial town with some interesting churches and buildings. But it doesn't have a compact, closed old town, that's why it wouldn't be my first choice.
If this is your fiest time in Berlin and you want to see "Old Germany" I would recommend either

  • Wittenberg, which is small but the sites are important (Protestant Reformation), and it's close to Berlin
  • Schwerin, which has a pleasant old town and a fairytale castle, but it takes 2h to get there
  • Potsdam, which has a partly preserved old town, but many unique sites from royal palaces and parks to Dutch and Russian houses

Hi,

Of all the small towns, villages, and cities in Brandenburg and eastern Germany I have been to, ie, in the old Mark Brandenburg, I've yet to go to Brandenburg an der Havel. If you're going by car, you'll be able to get to the Elbe-Havel Canal nearby. I would suggest after seeing Brandenburg an der Havel, go north wards to see Neuruppin...nice place, the town of two famous persons in Prussian-German cultural history....T. Fontane and Schinkel, whose works you see in Berlin.
