Borussia Hidden Gems

Hello fellow travelers! My family and I are in Germany right now in the Rheinland. We will be traveling up to Dusseldorf and cologne for a few days. We have a couple of days open and would like to find a cool city to stay in around that area. We love quaint towns, wine/beer, German food and sightseeing. If you have any good suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated!!
Thank you!
Julia

I thought this was going to be a soccer question...

That region isn't the best in Germany for quaint towns, but you may want to take a look at Jülich and Stolberg. I've heard good things about Monschau, but never visited personally.

Düsseldorf's a little light on things for tourists to do (unless you're into high-end shopping), but if you're there anyway, allow yourself a stroll through the Oberkassel district on the left bank of the Rhine. There's no real attrations, it's just one of the most elegant neighborhoods I've seen anywhere in Germany.

Hi,

For the "couple of days open" in that area, depending how far, you want to go, I suggest Düsseldorf, (Altbier is the Düsseldorf speciality, served in small glasses), Dortmund (only if you want to try the famous Dortmund beers). Quaint towns are Neuss, Soest a bit farther out in Westfalen, Höxten, Minden an der Weser (very doable as a day trip from Düsseldorf...all very historical and cultural. If you prefer the other direction up the Lower Rhine area, I suggest Kleve and Xanten as the quaint historical towns.
