Boppard - loved it

We stayed at Boppard and we highly recommend this cute little town on the Rhine. There is a nice riverfront with hotels and restaurants and a cute downtown within 1 block of the river. We stayed at the Baudobriga Rheinhotel. The staff was pleasant and our room was modern and clean. The room looked like it may have been renovated a few years ago and everything appeared new. Breakfast was wonderful - sitting in front of big windows looking at the Rhine. The various boat companies have docks right in front of the hotel. I know that Rick suggests Bacharach. We spent a few hours there and were very happy that we opted to stay in Boppard. The town of Bacharach sits back from the Rhine and the 2 lane highway is between the Rhein and the walls of Bacharach. There did not seem to be as many places to stay or eat in Bacharach. Stay in Boppard - you will not be disappointed. We ate at a cute, little Italian place a 5 minute walk from the hotel - Zum Schnuggel Elsie - yummy bruschetta!

Yes, that's a perk that you miss out on if Bacharach is your base - and it's a memorable perk as well. Boppard has a few other solid advantages for the average visitor too.

You picked Boppard's most adorable building for your Italian meal. Schnuggel Elsje was a beloved Boppard resident who ran a candy shop there. The building has had different faces over time - an ice cream parlor, a tea house, and restaurant to my knowledge. I thought it was quite a special honor to Elsje and her role in life that a sculpture of her stands in front of the building now:

Thanks for the report.

Note to others who may be heading to Boppard: While there's normally a ferry crossing at Boppard, the dock was badly damaged and repair plans are not yet in place. There are other ways to get across the river however via St Goar to the south and Koblenz to the north. The damage does NOT impact river cruise travel as these boats use a different dock on the same waterfront. You can still start a cruise in Bingen or Rüdesheim and make your way to Boppard using the regular cruise schedules.

I'm glad you liked Boppard. I was there in 2022 and really enjoyed my stay there. It's a really lovely town and very convenient to all the sites in the Rhine area.

It doesn’t matter how many places there are to stay in a town. All you need is one. My favorite place to stay in Germany is a small place in Bacharach, Staying for the 6th time this year.

I love Boppard for the sessellift and the statue at the train station of a minor 1960s pop singer 😂😂😂

@bigtyke: I'm guessing that your return visits to that favorite place in Bacharach have much to do with the connections you have made with the host in question. I once had a connection like that with a private-accomodations host in Cochem. Ended up staying there 5 times total as no trip to Germany seemed right to me without 1-2 nights there to check in on my old friend. Every one of those stays was important and memorable.

@bigtyke: I'm sure you know the true story and are just funning us.

But to let everyone else in on the joke, there really was an Engelbert Humperdinck, an 18th century composer, and he live in Boppard. In fact, I stayed in a Privatzimmer on Engelbert Humperdinck Strasse, and walked by his mansion on the way to the train station.

The "minor" 1960s Pop singer, Arnold Dorsey, changed his stage name to Engelbert Humperdinck, I assume, to cash in on the funny name.

But not to highjack this thread, I've stayed in both Boppard and St Goar, and visited Bacharach. I was very impressed with "Im Mallerwinkl" in Bacharach and might stay there sometime, but the last time I was on the middle Rhein, I stayed in a hotel right on the Marktplatz in St Goar, and I really liked it best of all.
