I made a last minute reservations at Hotel Garni Gunther in Boppard for 3 days. Has anyone stayed there?
Appreciate any feedback!
We stayed there for 5 nights in September. What would you like to know?
I would like to know the condition of the rooms and bathrooms...clean, comfortable? Were the beds okay? Was the breakfast good? Are there good restaurants in the vicinity? Proximity to the train?
Thank you
Hi again, I'll try to answer all of your questions. The condition of our room was fine, we had a small balcony room facing the river. We were there during the winefest and fireworks, and we had the perfect view from our balcony. The room wasn't large by any means, but we were away all day anyway, so we really didn't care. It was just a plain room... nothing fancy.
The beds were exactly like every other bed on our whole trip. It was like a mattress on a platform, so to speak. Comfortable enough. We found the pillows sort of flat so we each rolled a towel and placed them underneath.
We noticed the housekeeping was like a lick and a promise every day. Empty the garbage cans, make the bed, maybe push a vacuum around a bit, and that was about all. We had things sitting out on a shelf in the bathroom, and that was never touched at all. There was mold in the shower which was bothersome to me, and I told the front desk about it. They were aware of it, and indicated that shower recaulking was an upcoming winter project. So maybe it will be better for you.
Buffet was plentiful, it was the same as the other places where we stayed. Cold cuts, fruits, juices, coffee, cereals, rolls, jams and jellies, little sausage bites, eggs... you get the idea. There was always enough and we never went hungry.
Although it's an awfully small town, we found plenty of places to eat. They close early (and we're late eaters at home!) so we needed to adjust accordingly. There was a place we loved, right by the train, called Gleis 3/4. The train was maybe a 15 minute walk away.
We had laundry done once while we were there. They said they don't usually offer laundry services, but since we had very little, (pack light!!) they just threw it in with theirs. Five euro for a wash dry AND fold. You couldn't beat it. We ordered drinks on the night of the fireworks, and had them on the balcony while watching the show. If I remember correctly, they didn't deliver them. We had to go down and pick them up ourselves.
There was a small elevator and the guy on duty when we checked in (Scott? Can't remember his name) carried our bags up for us. He was great... spoke perfect English.
So... all in all, we would not hesitate to stay there again. Maybe we'd tuck a Clorox bleach gel pen in our bag, but otherwise it was perfectly fine. We were out touring all day anyway so we were barely even in the room.
Oh-- one more thing about our bathroom. It was tiny. And I mean TINY. But it was fine.
Hope this answers your questions, if you have any more, feel free to ask and I will answer if I can.
Judy
PS: edited to add that there are also places right on the river promenade where you can eat, plus the ferry is right there. No walking if you want to catch the ferry to the other side. What do you plan to do when you're there??
Thank you so much for your reply. We are going on our first trip to Germany in a couple of weeks and are very excited. I just noticed your trip reports and read one. It was so well written and interesting. I can't wait to read the others.
Thanks for sharing!
I wrote maybe a dozen so far and I still have to finish the last day in Boppard. What are your plans while there?
There are four of us traveling, my sister, her husband, my husband and myself. We have planned a 15 day trip to Germany. We land in Frankfurt then take the train to Boppard. We plan to stay there three days touring the Rhine and visiting the small towns such as Bacharach and St Goar and tour a couple of castles, Burg Eltz and Rheinfels.
From here, we want to rent a car and drive to Munich stopping off at Rothenburg or Baden-Baden. This will be a very full day but we wanted to see part of the country by car. We plan to spend three nights in Munich with short side trips to Dachau and Neuschwanstein Castle. We have hired local tour guides recommended by Rick Steves here, in Salzburg and in Berlin.
Next, we will take the train to Salzburg and spend three nights. We plan to do a day trip to Hallstatt and the salt mines.
From Salzburg, we will travel by train to Berlin. We will also spend three nights in Berlin with a tour planned with local guide, Bernhard Schlegelmilch.
We fly back to Frankfurt from Berlin to return to the states.
I welcome any suggestions you may have! Thank you.
