Book Train Travel in Germany (Multiple Cities)

Hi everyone-

I know there are many different types of train tickets in Germany (Bayern, Lander, etc.). Can someone please tell me what the best/cheapest way to book or type of ticket to book?

This is our itinerary below. We are hoping to leave each city for the next one between 8am-10am each day we require a train. What would be the best ticket options/purchases to make? Or is it best to buy each ticket separately on the DB website?

Please advise!

Thank you so very much.

Much love from Canada! ☺

I am curious about this day.

Saturday September 29, 2018 Berlin to Cologne
Saturday September 29, 2018 Cologne to Dusseldorf
Saturday September 29, 2018 Dusseldorf to Cologne

You could book a Sparpreis ticket to Cologne with a scheduled stopover in Duesseldorf for free. You can store luggage in lockers at Duesseldorf Hbf, and buy local day tickets. There is another trick to have an open ticket on to Cologne. It sounds complicated, but here is how you do it.

Start by entering from Berlin to Koeln (Cologne) Hbf. Then enter a stopover in Duesseldorf Hbf for 4 hours say. Now click on connections. It will show a list of transport types and a block that says "Admit changes" for both legs of the journey. The first one will say Berlin to Duesseldorf and the second one Duesseldorf to Koeln. On the first one, change the end block to "Direct connections". On the second leg, deselect the the boxes for ICE and IC, then change the end block to "Direct connections". When you hit the search button, you will get a direct ICE to Duesseldorf, then a regional train to Koeln. By the ticket rules, you can now take ANY regional train to Cologne, so you can stay in Duesseldorf for as long or short a time as you want. It is an open ticket on regional trains to Cologne.

Hi,

You have the option of taking the S-Bahn between Cologne and Düsseldorf, if you prefer, ie from Köln Hbf to Düsseldorf Hbf.

Frankfurt to Munich on the ICE 2nd class is always packed, every time I've done that ride 2nd class with or without a seat reservation, the coach was packed, which affects luggage space, or lack of it.

If you're ready to book some advance-discount tickets through DB according to Sam's plan, and then some regional tickets that can be purchased later, you might spend about $400 US per person. Costs will go up if you're not yet ready to reserve the longer, more expensive rides.

For comparison, the cost of a 2-country Select pass covering all 8 travel days is $387 per person in 2nd class, plus $51 per person to cover both reservations to and from Paris ($18 + 33, both available now, brings the total to $438) and about $5 each for any optional German seat reservations you want to book on shorter notice through DB. There will be fewer decisions that you need to lock in now, but you still probably want to book the Paris reservations at the same time that you buy the pass. Note that our purchase links are only for delivery to US street addresses. For Canadian delivery, Rail Europe has a separate site with Canadian pricing.
