It would help to know what your interests are. For example, if you're into cars, you could stop in Stuttgart to see the Mercedes-Benz museum (highly recommended). A lot folks like to visit Nuremberg and Bamberg.

I'm not the person to ask about drive times, etc., but there are others on the Forum who will be able to address this.
I will say that Bamberg is on my list as a beautiful town to visit. It's between Regensburg and Wurzburg, though, so it might not fit your schedule.

From Wurzburg to Fussen, you have the amazing Romantic Road that includes several medieval walled cities and villages as well as 2000 year old Augsburg.

It's not too hard to see the reason for the popularity - despite the modern roots of the idea, the tour combines the historic cities of Würzburg and Augsburg with the three medieval walled towns of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen, and then finishes off with the tourist highlights of Neuschwanstein Castle and the Alps.

I don't think it is too much. Basing with the car is a good thing. Take your time driving. For some country and adventure take the secondary roads, just be ready for the extra diving time. Why is driving to Füssen the hard part? Have you driven into Austria?

Hello again,,about driving to Fussen, may I say that driving anywhere in Europe posses a problem, however I am sure that I will be just fine. With regards to Austria, we did have it on our list but decided to delete it and spend more time in Germany and thus not having the issue of cross border driving requirements, I will be securing an IDL also. May I inquire are you in Germany? Leonard

The Romantic Road is the natural route. Don’t be a slave to the route. Look at other places that are a way off the road. Eichstatt is one such place, Vellberg is another

From Wurzburg don't take the romantic Road if you've seen those places. Take Route 13 and head to Ansbach. You'll go through some interesting little towns, (Marktbergle, Illeshiem, Uffenheim), and Ansbach is really quite nice. Take that to Weissenburg, and then pick up Route 2, which will turn a bit west. You may want to stop in Donauworth, another interesting town. Stay on that road to Augsburg, and then pick up Route 17 to Fussen. It will be slower than the Autobahn, but you'll see some country. You could also just stay a night on the route, there are plenty of places.

Yes to KGC's suggestions, especially Weissenburg.

Slightly to the west of the Romantic Road, Schwäbisch Hall was a great visit for me. Bad Wimpfen might be a little too far out of the way?

Definitely try Weissenburg if you are into smaller, quite picturesque towns. Their city wall is still largely intact but serves as a leisure space now. Try Wuelzburg fortress near, if you are into that - 17th century fortress, quite impressive (albeit no castle). Future French president de Gaulle was there as a PoW in WWI, among others…
