BMW Welt & Museum without Plant Tour. is it worth it?

Hi All,

We initially plan to do the guided factory tour but it's fully booked until the end of Aug >_<
so there're only the Welt & Museum left. I just wonder would it worth our time going there? I only have a day for Munich city tour.

from what i read around, the Welt is just a huge showroom and mainly showcase the architecture of the building. some of the latest version of the cars are showcased but the doors are locked! so what's the point of showing the cars there? only 1 of the simulator works according to a review when a tourist visited there in March. the Museum exhibits all BMW cars have ever made which could be interesting for car enthusiast but I wonder how attractive the museum could be especially there's a Euro 10 admission fee. The location of BMW is also slightly off the city centre. Should I be better off spending my time elsewhere such as the Munich Residence?

highly appreciate your advice

cheers

I found the museum worth the admission price. It's one of the better automotive museums in German. With just one day in Munich though you will have to decide for yourself if looking at cars is better than another cultural aspect.

For me personally I think the time would be better spent in the city center, parks and biergartens if I only had one day.

I was just in BMW Welt with my grandson a couple of hours ago. Car doors were opening and closing and visitors were sitting in the cars.

I think BMW Welt has enough to be of interest if you only have time for a short visit. There are many exotic BMW models not imported to the USA on display. BMW Group also owns Rolls Royce and Mini, so those are showcased as well. A mint-condition BMW Isetta was a popular display today. There are multiple nice restaurants, and the gift shop is excellent. BMW Welt's hours are much more extensive than the Museum's, and admission is free.

When you leave BMW Welt, it's a quick walk over the pedestrian bridge to the Olympic Tower, where from 185 meters high you have an awesome view of Munich and environs. It was clear today, so the Alps were visible in the distance.

From Marienplatz it takes about 15-20 minutes to get to BMW Welt (right next to the Olympia-Zentrum U-Bahn station) on the U3.

Another suggestion for an automotive museum might be the Verkehrszentrum, that features all manner of ground transport -- autos, motorcycles, trains, urban transit, etc. From Hauptbahnhof or Karlsplatz-Stachus take the U4 or U5 to Schwanthalerhöhe, and from there it's a 5-minute walk.

I too was just there last week. The museum displays their history in airplane engines, motorcycles and automobiles. Below the bridge they have about 10 motorcycles on display that people were sitting on and taking pictures. The price includes the current MINI exhibition, showing its history, variety of models, modifications done by the company and civilians as well as a few prototypes. I own a MINI so this was a nice added feature. The ride out there was easy, about the 8th stop from Marienplatz on the U3 train. You want to get off at the Olympian-Zentrum stop, the museum and plant are out in front of the exit as well as the Olympic Park to the Right. We had about a dozen BMW plant employees with us on the ride out there. The U3 line is the Orange line and you want to catch it going towards Moosach, the end of the U3 line heading towards BMW. The ticket was easy to purchase, we just got an all day ticket from the machine.
