I will be in Munich for a week at the end of June and have a rental car. I will have one day open day and want to see a car plant. My 17 year old son will be with me. My dilemma is which one, Porsche or BMW?
BMW is right in the city and my family were very impressed with the factory tour. Remember to reserve ahead. I haven't been to Porsche in Leipzig but assume they're about equal.
we really enjoyed doing the BMW plant tour and BMW Welt/museum. the tour guide was very good, in english. you got to walk very close to the production line.
unless it has changed we had to phone to book tickets. worth checking, well in advance. we have not done the porsche tour to compare.
hope this helps
BMW also offers short term car rentals. Click on Laura's first link then go to BMW on demand.
I've found the BMW more interesting in terms of the actual manufacturing and factory. Plus it's right in Munich so you can't beat the location based on your itinerary.

I called BMW on Friday and secured two tickets for the plant tour.
we have reservations for both, however, Porsche is in Stuttgart, not Munich
Actually we have decided to do both. A drive to Stuttgart may be interesting
Munich to Stuttgart is a pretty long distance. I wouldn't do it as a day trip.
If you have only one day, how are you going to do both tours plus 230km in between?
Having "only one day" was referring to a day budgeted to visiting a car plant. We will be in the area for eight days. We have decided to move another thing aside and end up with two days , one day for each pla nt.
Have you considered moving a few more things aside and ending up with an additional day for the Autostadt in Wolfsburg? ;-) And let's not forget Opel in Rüsselsheim... ;-)
The Porsche factory tour is in Leipzig (possibly too far for a 1 day trip from Munich). You can send them an email to inquire about availability from their webpage: https://www.porsche-leipzig.com/en/offers/event-packages/discover-porsche-in-leipzig/
The tour is factory tour ZUFFENHAUSEN, in Stuttgart, not Leipzig. Google shows it 2 hr, 16m and 232km, about 140 miles on A8
