We are a family with 4 adolescent/young adult males ages 16-21 who will be visiting Munich this summer. We are wondering whether the BMW plant or factory tour would be more interesting. Thank you very much!
Both Plant and Factory refer to the same tour and it is very interesting; see phone info to reserve ahead at http://www.bmw-welt.com/en/visitor_information/guided_tours/plant.html. You can't visit without the tour and it does sell out.
Other terms you'll see are BMW Welt/World, which is an informative display center of new cars and the BMW Museum, with historic cars. Those both offer optional tours which don't have to be booked ahead, or you can wander on your own.
BMW Welt is almost as much fun, but it's open longer hours, and unlike the museum, it's free.
Along those lines, do not miss the transportation branches of the Deutsches Museum: Verkehrszentrum (Schwanthalerhöhe station, U4/U5) for exhibits pertaining to ground transportation; and Flugwerft Schleißheim (Oberschleißheim station, S1) for things with wings.

My parents and I also really enjoyed both transport museums that Jeff recommends.
I emailed them a few weeks ago about availability for a tour for 6 of us in June. Haven't received a response yet. :o(
Thank you for your replies. I called and it is too soon to reserve the factory tour so I will call back next month.
