Black Forest thru Gengenbach?

Short on time going from Stuttgart to Luxembourg City, better to go thru Gengenbach & then Salzburg, France or shorter route North staying in Germany longer? Just want a glimpse of the Black Forest, thx!

Salzburg? That's in Austria, several hundred miles from the Black Forest.

Or do you mean Strasbourg?

Are you on KONUS or a different train ticket? Or are you driving?

Are you looking for the shortest, fastest or most scenic route?

People are too quick to bad-mouth the Black Forest. I've spent 23 days there in 4 places on 7 trips. I keep going back, because it's beautiful. I remember, on my first trip there, to Alpirsbach, being amazed at the beauty of the deep, pine forested valley.

If you take the Black Forest route, go through Freudenstadt. If you go from there via the Kinzig valley (Gengenbach) to Strasbourg, the trip, according to the Bahn, is 5 hours 16 minutes.

The northern route, via Mannheim, could be either via Kaiserslautern or down the Rhein gorge via Bacharach and St. Goar. I would strongly recommend doing the Rhein gorge route over the Kaiserslautern. That would take 5 hours 52 minutes (longer, but more scenic than through Kaiserslautern) and longer that through Gengenbach.

On the other hand, for the Black Forest route, you could go via the Freudenstadt Stadtbahnhof down the Murg valley to Rastatt. I think the Murg valley is more scenic than the Kinzig. That trip would take 6 hours 16 minutes, a little longer but more scenic.

Lubitsch is the Germany board grump. :)

Or perhaps just the Germany board blunt German?

No need to apologize.

One of the places I've been to, but not stayed overnight, is Calw. It's a quite little town, rather avant-garde, filled with Fachwerk buildings. It was the hometown of Hermann Hesse (Steppenwolf). From Calw, continue up the Nagold River to Hochdorf, then take the train down via Freudenstadt Stadtbahnhof to Rastatt.

Looks like the OP was in a rush, I think he posted a few hours before starting his drive.
