Black Forest or Alsace?

I am taking an Avalon Rhine River cruise in April, and for our free afternoon in Strasbourg we are given a choice of 3 optional excursions. One is a bus tour to the Black Forest, stopping at the Vogtsbaurenhof Museum in Gutach. The second choice is a bus tour on the Alsace Wine Route, with a stop in Obernai and a wine tasting. I have never been to either area and would love to do both -- but unfortunately I have to chose between the two. (They also offer a trip to the Maginot Line, but not being a war buff, I'm not that interested.)

I am also posting this on the France Forum.

I thought the Vogtsbauernhof in Gutach was just great. I'm surprised that they offer that tour since it is now possible to reach the place independently by train. How much is this tour? You may wish to do this on your own. The 1.25 hour train trip is very cheap because of the Europass 24h offer from the local transit authorities - For €13.50 two adults can come and go as they please between Strasbourg and Gutach. That way you can leave early or stay later, and possibly make a stop along the way in Gengenbach, a thoroughly delightful old world town between Offenburg and Gutach. The 9:22 train from Strasbourg requires an easy change of train first in Offenburg and another in Hausach prior to arrival in Gutach. Return the opposite way. Gengenbach is actually between the Hausach station and Offenburg station.

Gengenbach

How's your French or your German? I don't know of an English-language page that explains the EUROPASS 24H DEAL.

Hi,

My suggestion is to take the bus tour in Alsace. The first time I spent a few days in Strasbourg in the late 1990s seeing the sights, etc I wanted to do a day trip close by taking the train. I went to Obernai,.. very picturesque, typical Alsacien, saw a lot people in the service industry who were bilingual in German and French, and well worth visiting.

We've been to both places - that will be a hard decision, as both tours would be interesting. We were at the Vogtsbaurenhof Museum this past October and really enjoyed our morning there. the old houses and buildings are very interesting. Having a tour guide would add to your enjoyment. If you are able to see some demonstrations eg. wood carving, water-wheel grinding grain, apple crushing for juice (probably not in April), etc., that will add to your enjoyment. The scenery on the way to Gutach is very pleasant. We spent a week in the Alsace in Ribeauville, near Colmar, during April a couple of years ago. We loved the little towns and fields full of grape vines all through-out the Alsace. In April many trees will be in bloom - the lilacs and wisteria were in full bloom when we were there in late April.

You can't go wrong with either choice.

If you go to Gutach, you might also visit the luge a few hundred feet away from the Vogtsbauernhof

Russ, thanks for your very informative reply. But if we go we will probably take the tour offered by Avalon (38€), which includes bus transport and guide.

Thanks to all for your opinions.
