Black Forest, Gengenbach, Konus Card and Beer

Hello All-
In September we will be staying in Gengenbach for three days and are going to use our Konus cards for a couple of day trips. The first day we'll arrive in Gengenbach around noonish and probably just spend the rest of the day there exploring. The next day could be a day trip to Freiburg. The third day is still up in the air. Maybe a trip to Schiltach and Freudenstadt? I thought that I read somewhere that there is a monastery that still brews beer somewhere around there? Anybody know of this or have any other suggestions for day trips. I'll be with my 22 year old son, so I thought that he might enjoy the brewery. Thanks!

remember that when you change at Offenburg to the train to Freiburg im Breisgau to take the regional train. The KONUS Card is not valid on the faster IC or on ICE trains.

Also, if you are going that far and want to dip your toe into Basel in Switzerland the same regional train goes all the way to Basel Bad Bahnhof which has Basel trams right outside the station going over the river to the old city. KONUS is valid to Basel Bad Bahnhof, but not further, not to Basel SBB, the main station.

Thanks Nigel! How are you doing these days? I don't know if you remember, but we met through Englischausen at Laubach a couple years ago I'm the dentist and my wife is Joy!

This is a good website for finding interesting places in the Black Forest. https://www.black-forest-travel.com/places-of-interest/

You also might enjoy the Open Air museum near Gutach, which took mostly original farm buildings from hundreds of years ago and moved them to a specific site. I loved it but not sure if a 22 year old would. :-) https://www.vogtsbauernhof.de/en

Schiltach and Freudenstadt would be good choices. Schiltach is charming and worth a visit. I'm not sure about breweries; I know that Alpirsbach has a Klosterbräu, but I have not been there.

Alpirsbach is where the monastery brewery is. go to alpirsbach.de and use the drop down menu ( the 3 dashed lines ) to change to English

In Gengenbach try to visit the Narren Musem ( Fastnacht - Mardi Gras - masks and costumes ) open limited hours, closed Mon., Tues, Thurs. The tourist office has a brochure on a walking tour of the town - follow the bronze markers in the sidewalks/streets

Day trip to Triberg - cuckoo clocks, nice local museum, waterfall. Schiltach’s free, well designed town museum is interesting

Your note about a monastery that brews beer caught my eye. I have a recommendation, but it's a bit farther afield than you might be willing to travel. In Bamberg, a mid-size town in the northern part of Bavaria state, there is a Franconian Brewery Museum on the site of a former Benedictine Monastery: https://en.bamberg.info/poi/franconian_brewery_museum-4670/. The museum brews its own beer or it did when I visited back in 1996. It's 29 years since my visit, and I still remember the beer I drank there -- better than wine, champagne or the elixir of life itself. Bamberg has other great sites.

The Black Forest Railway itself is an engineering marvel (for its time) and very enjoyable. Eurail lists it among Europe's most scenic routes. I'd suggest riding it from Gengenbach as far as Villingen (a nice old-world, non-touristy walled town.) DIRECT RE trains from Gengenbach get there in one hour.

The Black Forest Open Air Museum Mardee mentions is outstanding and only a few minutes from Gengenbach by train. Look for schedules to the Gutach Freilichtmuseum stop, which is right in front of the museum, as this photo indicates.
