Black Forest area

I’m traveling in Germany (by car) in September for 3 days, and want to visit the Black Forest area. I’m starting near Würzburg. There are 4 adults and an infant (9 months). Are there any “must see” places in this area? We love to hike and are interested in history. We were going to visit Baden-Baden and see the baths, but we’ve decided not to because of the baby (maybe when he’s older). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I liked Gengenbach as a base town. Cute little town with many Fachwerkhäuser (half-timbered houses). It is a Konus Card town, so you can park the car and use regional trains free of charge. If you want more of a city experience/base, Freiburg is popular, but it does not participate in the Konus Card.

Titisee is pretty but quite touristy. Schluchsee is larger and has more to offer in terms of hiking. Schluchsee is a popular vacation destination for Germans, but no so much for non-Germans. Triberg is also touristy, but I like waterfalls; I found Triberg Falls pleasant. A friend and I did the Schwarzwaldbahn Erlebnispfad (Black Forest Railway Hiking Trail), which starts at the Triberg rail station. The trail takes you to various stations associated with the railway. Two interconnecting loops are part of the trail system. We took the lower loop/trail and enjoyed it.

Perhaps you are familiar with Cicerone guides? They have a guide for walks/hikes/treks/bike rides in the Black Forest (along with some "free" content on the website).

Trapie1002,

If you are interested in history and being outside. Try the open air black forest museum in Gutach the Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof. They have relocated farmhouses from the 16th to the 19th century, a sawmill, chapel, gift shop, cafe, and playground (although at 9 months your infant may be too little). There are some farm animals and plantings as well. Since you walk from building to building, most of the experience is outdoors. Here's a link: https://www.vogtsbauernhof.de/en

If you pass through Freiburg im Breisgau go check out the Münster. It's a romanesque and gothic cathedral that took over 300 years to build, starting in 1200, and has a very ornate spire.

I hope you guys have a great trip!
