Black Forest

I would like to tour the Open Air Black Forest Museum. Does anyone know if it's easy to get there form Titisee-Neustadt or from Freiburg, using public transportation? I will not be driving a car there. Thank you!

You can get there by public transportation, although there might be several transfers. Here is a link to their website where they give the particulars of getting there. I would definitely review this because it tells you specifics about which stop to get off at. https://www.vogtsbauernhof.de/en/visit/how-to-get-here

After that go to the Deutsch Bahn website and you can look up the train schedules from your originating town to the museum. https://int.bahn.de/en

It used to be that to get to the Freilichtmuseum you had to go to Hausach and walk. Now the museum has it's own station at Gutach. It still takes several changes from Freiburg (Offenburg and Hornberg) or Titisee (Donaueschingen and Hornberg). I think if you have a choice it's easier from Freiburg. However, the part from Triberg to Hornsberg (from Tititsee), on the Schwarzwaldbahn through the Gutach River valley might by itself be worth the trip.

There are a lot of Gutach-stations at the DB site. The one at the Vogtsbauernhof is named "Gutach Freilichtmuseum." The museum is visible from the station... well, it is actually immediately adjacent to the train station, as you can see.

A good base-town option might be Gengenbach, a very charming old-world town located on the scenic Black Forest Railway, which Lee has mentioned above. It gets mentioned A LOT on this forum, not only for its charm but for its convenient location and because it's a "KONUS town" (guests here receive the KONUS card for free outings by train.)

It is only 25 minutes by train from Gengenbach to the museum. Freiburg would be 1.25 hours. Gengenbach shares the BF Railway with other popular towns... Villingen, Triberg, and Haslach, for example... and is also very close to Schiltach:

I agree with Russ about using Gengenbach as a base. It's truly a beautiful and charming town, with very good train connections. I stayed in Gengenbach for 4 nights in 2022 and loved it. The town has the iconic half-timbered houses (it's frequently called a "chocolate box" village) and has a beautiful Altstadt, with quite a few restaurants and cafes to choose from. There are lots of things to do there and it's very easy to get to the Vogtsbauernhof from there by train. You could also take a day trip to Strasbourg in France if you like, as it's a quick 40 minute train ride away.

And the fact that you get free public transportation with the KONUS card that Russ mentioned is a bonus. I definitely recommend staying here.
