Black Forest (5 - 7 days) ..... Is Gengenbach the right place to make a base

Hi.
We want to spend 5 - 6 days exploring the Black Forest area in July. Our main aim is to make a BASE in one (or maximum two) place(s) and explore the natural beauty around. We are a family of 4, including two children ages 15 & 18. We like walks & hikes (but not too strenuous). We want to have a relaxed family vacation.
After spending a week in Amsterdam and Bruges, we'll be driving to Germany. Enroute, we'll stop over for a night in Trechtingshausen and then head to Black Forest. Initially we were thinking of breaking down the Black Forest leg in two parts. First stop in either Tübingen or Sigmaringen (or close by) and the second part in a farm house in (or close to) Seelbach.
Based on available accommodation and a number of reviews, we are now "thinking" of making Gengenbach the base & then drive around.

In a nutshell, we'll be grateful if the experienced travelers can guide us on the following:

  1. Is the proposed duration i.e. 5-6 days sufficient (or too much) to explore the Black Forest area
  2. Is Gengenbach the right place to make a "Base"
  3. Should we make just one base, or, as envisaged earlier, divide our Black Forest trip into two separate parts. If so, which two places
  4. Any other recommendations for lodging, other than hotel Die Reichsstadt

The place (i.e. the hotel / holiday rental) where we stay is very important for us as we feel comfort (& if possible a bit of luxury) is an integral part of the whole experience. We initially wanted to stay at a very nice Farm House near Seelbach; however it is not available throughout the month of July. Apart from being (apparently) a central place, another reason for considering Gengenbach is that a very nice hotel is available (Die Reichsstadt).

We can take our return flight either from Zurich or Frankfurt (preference is Zurich).

Will be extremely grateful for input from experts on the above.

With best regards,
Waqas

If you can get into Die Reichsstadt it is unlikely you will regret it.

It has moved up a grade or two since we used to stay there - unfortunately the price has moved out of our comfort level - but we loved it. Fun and comfy rooms, location can't be beat, great staff, breakfast in the garden in good weather (also tea and cakes in the afternoon, and a scrummy dinner with candles in the garden can't be beat) is beautiful and tasty. In rainy weather eating indoors is good too.

They've added spa facilities now that we haven't tried. The parking was out of use when we stayed - during the construction - but parking in the public area just behind the hotel was never difficult. They may again offer their own parking.

Gengenbach is one of my favourite towns and convenient to many things. 5 minutes walk from the hotel to the station, free travel with the KONUS card.

Thanks a lot for your response Nigel.

As I'd asked in my main post, do you think making ONE base (i.e. Gengenbach) and then moving around is ok? We will have our car & will of course also use the local trains. Secondly, is 5 days a reasonable duration to explore Black Forest area.
Best regards,
Waqas

Most places in the Black Forest will give you a Konus Card, which gives you free use of the regional trains and the buses in the Black Forest. There aren't a lot of rail lines in the Black Forest, but you can get to almost anywhere with the buses. The Bahn schedule webpage will give you bus as well as train connections.

I think I could manage to spend a week exploring the area from a base in Gengenbach. Go up the rail line to Hausach and visit the open-air Black Forest museum with it farm houses from all over the BF. From there, continue up the Gutach (south) to the clock town of Triberg. The Bahnhof for Triberg is about a mile out of town but there seem to be connecting buses. Or go north to Freudenstadt, called the capital of the northern Black Forest. Hint, it's a long, steep walk up the hill from the Hauptbahnhof. Catch the shuttle to the Stadtbahnhof.

From Gengenbach, you can also go to Baden-Badden (I would not recommend spending more than a day there) or to Strasbourg. The Konus Card will get you to Kehl, on the Rhein, via Offenburg. It's a 4 euro ticket from Kehl to Strasbourg.

I spent my first two nights in the Black Forest in Alpirsbach. It's in a beautiful deep, wooded valley. It's not a very big town, but it has a 900 year old Kloster and is he home of the Alpirsbacher Klosterbräu brewery, which you can tour.

My husband and I made Gengenbach our base for 5 days in 2014. It is a very small town but quaint and picturesque and we loved it. We stayed at Gasthof Hirsch, parked our car for a few days and took the regional train for free (just a short walk to the train station) with the KONUS card we received from our inn. One day to Triberg (where we hiked a bit to some nice waterfalls), one day to Strasbourg, another day somewhere else... We took the car and 'discovered' by accident the little town of Schiltach. We also spent several hours at the Vogtsbauernhof Museum, a wonderful outdoor collection of farmhouses, some dating back to the 1600's. My husband still laments to this day that we didn't spend more time in that area, as 5 days wasn't enough.
