Birkenstock Bargains in Germany

I love Birkenstocks. Yes, I've tried all the other exotic, expensive foreign brands (Naot, etc) but Birkenstocks (and Birki's) work the best for me. Now that I'm coming to Germany, are there any Birkenstock bargains to be found?

If you're in Germany during one of the few sales periods every year, you might get a discount. Otherwise, if you live in the US, they're probably cheaper there.

I had the same thought a few years ago when traveling to Germany. I asked all around for Birkenstocks, but no one knew what I was talking about. Finally, I found some in a medical supply shop and they only had the most boring colors and styles.

Now that I am here in Vienna, I have found a Birkenstock dealer who has more of a variety, but the prices are the same here (if not more) than what you would find in the US.

Eight years ago during my first trip to Germany we found a couple of places that sold Birkenstocks. One was in Munich, not far from the train station. Another was in Rothenburg. I remember this because we spent time in those shops. My sister bought several pair. I have no idea if she paid less than she would have here. When she wants something she buys it without thinking of any cost savings.

Actually I did see some on this trip that were a good deal. In a shoe store in Bacharach they had the same sandals that I was wearing on sale for 49 Euro (about $67) which was quite a bit less than I paid for mine in the US. I paid $80 for mine and that was about 10 years ago. If I had had room in my bag for another pair of shoes I would have been sorely tempted.

So, it does appear that there are occasional sales in individual shoe stores but I suppose you have to luck into them.

Thanks for your replies, everyone. I actually bought some Birks in Italy at a good price a few years ago. Even Italians wear sensible shoes these days. I'll be in Bacharach on this trip so you can be sure I'll find that shoe store - hopefully with some Birks on sale!

There's a Birkenstock outlet in Bad Honnef, not far from Bonn. Plenty of bargains and some unusual high-end Birks never seen in stores in the US. Not worth a special trip but a fun stop if you're in the area.

Frankfurt has a Birkenstock outlet on Berliner Strasse and is getting ready to open a 2nd one on Neue Krämer. Both are near the Römer. Have also seen them in Reform Houses, as well as dept. stores in the shoe sections.

There are a handful of official Birkenstock outlets around Germany. Jo mentions one. Another is here: Great selection for adults and kids. Town is remote, you'd need a car to get here for sure.

just found good bargains today on Bikenstock and Papillio: at Ommergau on left side of road on the way to Garmische. I bought 3 pair!

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions. I'm jealous of Carol! We'll be in the Rhine/Mosel and Eifel Forest west of Cologne. I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open in those areas.

I was able to get the location of an Birkenstock outlet at a TI when we stopped in. So ask as you travel and maybe there will be one handy.
