biking options for kids?

My family and I will be in Germany and nearby (home base in Ramstein) for 5 weeks starting April 2015. We are excited to travel to towns like Bacharach, Baden-Baden, Salzburg Germany, and ideally we hope to bike along many bike/river paths available both within towns and to the country side. However, how kid-friendly are any of the bike rental options? We have a 6 yo, 4 yo, and 1 yo. None of them ride on their own. Are there ever any bikefiats or bike trailers that are available for rental? Is this usual or very much a rarity? Or, with children should we settle on walking/buses? :( Thanks!

I have seen both the trailer-cycles (kids bike that attaches to parent's bike seat post) and bike trailers for rent at bike shops in Germany. Here is an example of one shop's offering( third row down):

9-10 € a day for a Burley trailer. Some places I have seen Chariots and also German brands.

Since your home base is Ramstein, I'm assuming either that you are in the military or visiting someone who is. Either way, see what MWR Outdoor Rec can offer. With all the military families stationed in the area, I'm sure they must have something like this.

BTW... if you're looking to Baden-Baden because Mr. Steves brought his family there, don't be surprised if your kids find it completely boring. It appeals mostly to rheumatic senior citizens and Russian nouveau riche Putinites with more money than taste. If you're looking to partake in a thermal treatment, you can save yourself about a two hours drive and head just east on the A6 to Bad Dürkheim. Wiesbaden and Bad Kreuznacht also offer the same experience and are closer than Baden-Baden. All of these thermal resorts (of which Germany has over a hundred) also offer kid-friendly pools.

Lola and Tom, thank you both for the helpful information you shared. This makes me feel much more excited for the possibility of biking with our kids! Yes, we are military and will have to check into MWR options.

And thank you for the tip on thermal baths that are family-friendly and why to avoid Baden-Baden!
