Biking along the Rhine

We will arrive in Bacharach from Copenhagen tomorrow, Wed. June 18th and are hoping to bicycle along the Rhine toward St. Goal and Bingen as suggested by R.S. Has anyone done this and could provide a recommendation for bike rentals, comments on the route, etc. is it necessary to reserve a bike? Taking a chance someone might see this and respond today or tomorrow. This forum has been such a help in our planning and now here I am in Europe and still using it.

I don't know of any rental agencies (but I'm sure there are some), but I doubt you would need to reserve. The route is relatively flat, and barring any construction work (there always seems to be roadwork somewhere on the Rhine), you should be able to ride on the bike trail that runs along the Mittelrhein.

While on the road, the local tourist office is a good resource. In smaller towns, your hotel manager is also likely to know everyone. Here is the entry from p. 444 of Rick's Germany book, intro to the Bacharach section: Bike Rental: While many hotels loan bikes to guests, the only real bike-rental business in the town center is run by Erich at Hotel Hillen (€12/day, €10/half-day, daily 9:00-19:00, Langstrasse 18, a block south of Hotel Kranenturm, tel. 06743/1287).
