Big aesthetic changes coming to Munich Hbf

We walked to the train station today and found the whole front being dismantled. Everyone is directed around to the Gleis area to enter. I can’t wait to see what the new entrance will look like. It’s been a 50s nondescript building for so long.

You can see a preview at the project site. But it will take almost 10 years to complete, since rebuilding the station has to be coordinated with the construction of the second S-Bahn tunnel across the city center. It's a shame that they are demolishing the Starnberger Bahnhof too, which is an important document of early post war architecture.

Sla019 thanks for the link. Did the construction at the site begin in May of this year? Completion in 2029? I don’t have any ten year return trips planned so far, just 2020 and 2021 so I guess it will be slow progress checks for me.

I like to contribute the German saying "Schönheit liegt im Auge des Betrachters" (Beauty is defined by the watching person). Obviously I am the wrong watching person to find beauty in this architectual concept. Just my personal opinion.

@Mona
Yes, demolition of the central hall started in may. Completion of the central building, together with the new S-Bahn tunnel, is scheduled for 2026. But the peripheral parts such as the Starnberger Bahnhof will not be completed before 2029. I have to get used myself to the idea of walking once a week through a ruin for the next decade.

@MarkK
I agree. It will only a be tiny bit uglier than the Berlin central station. ;)

Yeah, not a pretty building at all. Hard to believe they are going to spend this kind of money and not build a through tunnel. The DB hates these dead-end stations. That is the hot topic in Frankfurt but it isn't the first time that has been on the discussion table. At least we have a beautiful old building.

@Markk, Identical saying in English: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
The direct translation is the same.

As an architect, I think these renderings on the link above are amazing. This station is in dire need of some help, and the old facade was missing quite a few panels when I was just there this past July. I recall thinking then this place needs some serious renovation. This is a welcome change to me, but architecture, like art, is subjective so others are right to think differently.
Happy Travels Ya'll!

Yeah, it was pretty messy navigating the area. My favorite train station from our trip (got back last night) was Leipzig, least favorite Gotha, and why does Prague have two almost right next to each other.
