Anyone cycled up or down the Rhine from Boppard? I’d like to go up or down stream about 10 miles then return. Is here a dedicated bike trail? Is it safe, like no cars whizzing by? And I’d like to rent a bike but not a three speed cruiser. Anyone know of a rental company offering quality bikes for long distance?
I didn't cycle, but was on a river cruise in May and there is a bike trail along the river.
I don't know a rental company, but ask your hotel concierge. It's an easy path along the river, either direction. Best thing is to plan for a one way trip and return by train. You can take bikes on the train. But you can also do a round trip if that's best for you.
I stayed in Boppard in June. Our local host recommended Rent a Bike Boppard on Simmener Strasse for the best pricing. Easy walk from the train station. I will add that I did not rent bikes. We did stop by and inquired for our last day but then realized we just didn't have time. They had e-bikes as well as standard. I think they had both road and mountain style bikes.
Here is the official website of the EuroVila 15 (the Rhine River Bike Trail), which has info on biking along the Rhine. The link below is for the portion between Bingen and Cologne, which would be the segment you would want. I would suggest biking down to Sankt Goar, which is about 10 miles from Boppard. If you don't want to bike back, you could always get on the ferry there with your bikes and then ferry back up the river to Boppard.
In 1996, I bicycled along the Rhine River but near Bacharach, which is only 20 miles south of Boppard. When I did my trip, there was a dedicated bike trail without cars on the western shore of the Rhine. It must go to Boppard. There was a bicycle rental agency adjacent to the trail by Bacharach.
