Between-tour rest stop Amsterdam to Munich

We have 5 days to get from Amsterdam to Munich between tours in April. Thinking an easy, restful stay somewhere to recharge and clean up would be nice, with some sightseeing via public transport. Cochem seems nice. Any better suggestions?

The tours are the Brussels to Amsterdam (Belgium and Netherlands) tour (including Keukenhof), and the Munich-Salzburg-Vienna tour.

Mid April is perfect for Keukenhof and the tulips/hyacinths/crocuses in the area. Will you have had a chance to visit that part either on the tour or before you depart?

Frankfurt am Main is about half way. Lots to see there and thereabouts including a walled town or three, the lovely small town of Eltville which is right on the river, the newly rebuilt Altstadt, and lots more that isn't in the book. If you are interested I'm sure that Ms Jo will be along, and I can recommend an excellent walking tour if that is the sort of thing you'd like to do. All easily done by public transport.

Thanks, MarkK, the mid-Rhine Valley idea looks interesting for the countryside walks and low-key exploring. Frankfurt is a big city and although it would be simple to get there and then on to Munich and there's a lot to see, I was thinking we would be wanting a chance to wind down a bit in the countryside before hitting the museums and city sights again. Then again, your note, Nigel, about Eltville am Rhein could be an intermediate suggestion. On the Rhein, small town, easy access to a day in Frankfurt. Worth considering.

This has absolutely NO relation to your question - but just interested in which departure you are on for the Belgium and Holland tour? I'm on the April 6 tour.

I'd probably spend another night or 2 in Amsterdam if you haven't been before.

If you are a Van Gogh fan, you might consider Arnhem if onward transport isn't too difficult to Munich. This museum sounds very interesting to me.

I'd also plan to get to Munich the night before the tour starts. That way you can settle in, get some laundry done if needed and get the lay of the land, so to speak!

See you on the tour, Pam! Yes, we are on the April 6 tour. I lived in Den Haag for a while, so Amsterdam is somewhat familiar ground. Don't think I've seen the van Gogh museum in Arnhem, though. Too many other things to see, and I was working. (My wife wasn't with me, so this part of the trip will be new to her. I just love the Netherlands, so I don't mind going back.)

Just an FYI: After consulting with someone at the Rick Steve's office, we decided to head to Füssen, Germany, and stay in one of their recommended accommodations. I wasn't quick enough to get the room I wanted, but the one I got isn't bad and it has a kitchen so we can cook a few nights and save some time and money and really relax. And there's enough to do around there inside, in case the weather isn't good. We may rent a car for a few days, as well, to tour the Bavarian back roads. And it's a short train ride to Munich, so we'll be nice and fresh for the next tour.
