Between Berchtesgaden and Munich

We are looking for a reasonable Pension for one night on October 2, 2016. Ideal location is off of the A8. We will be coming from Berchtesgaden area and heading to Freising. We would like to be approximately an hour from Munchen/Freising. Any suggestions?

A few years I traveled the Alpenstrasse from Berchtesgaden to Rosenheim and stopped in Frasdorf for the night. It's pretty much half way between Berchtesgaden and Munich and right off the A8.

There are several places to stay in Frasdorf. (If you click on the name of a place, the next page will show you their website.)

I spent a night here, at Gasthof Hochries, and thought is was a nice enough place.

Here is another place in Frasdorf. I haven't stayed here. It's more expensive, but they do have English on their website.

Hi jean- I believe 2 Oct is the last (or next to last) night of the Oktoberfest. So you might have trouble getting close to Munich. However, I have heard great reviews of Erding but it is only 20 minutes or so from the airport and may be too close. Try booking.com for some options. Just follow their map from Piding toward Munich on A8 to see what is available. If you don't have a car you could even consider Oct 2 in Salzburg and train to Munich the next day. Have a great trip!!!!

Oktoberfest normally ends the first Sunday in October, BUT never before October 3, the Day of German Unity, which in 2016, is the first Monday. So this year Oktoberfest will end on Monday, October 3.

In 2007, I stayed in Lansberg am Lech, about an hour west of Munich by train, on the last Saturday night of Oktoberfest, and there was no problem getting a room. Freising is at the end of an S-Bahn line (as is Erding) and, therefore, very convenient to get to downtown Munich, so I would expect rooms to be difficult to get and pricey if you can, but an hour east or west of Munich I don't think will be a problem.

I don't have any specific recommendations for lodging, but you could do far worse than to stay in Rosenheim. There's nothing particularly spectacular about this small city, it's just so damn pleasent.

Prien am Chiemsee would be another good choice, particularly if you can get a room with a lake view.
