Best way to get to/from Berchtesgaden Salt Mines from Munich

Heading to Munich next week and visiting the Berchtesgaden Salt Mines is something we want to take our teens to.

What is the best way to get to and from the Salt Mines from Munich?

We also plan to go to Salzburg at some point during our 9 days...if that should/could be combined.

The last time my husband and I visited Berchtesgaden Salt Mines...we stumbled on it after wandering around for a while from the train station. I'd rather have a better plan traveling with our kids.

Also--anything else in that area that is a 'must' see?

thank you

You can take 2 trains to get there.
Munich to Freilassing to Berchtesgaden Hbf and walk or take taxi to the mines

If you use a Bayern-Ticket to get to Berchtesgaden by regional train, it will also be valid on a regional bus (RVO 837, 8 min or RVO 848, 5 min) from the Berchtesgaden Hbf to the salt mines (called Salzbergwerk).

Note, you have to change trains in Freilassing. If you go all the way to Salzburg Hbf, the Bayern-Ticket is not honored on the Waltzmann Express (bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden)
