My husband and I need to get from Nurburgring to Munich on a Sunday during Oktoberfest. I was thinking about driving to Koblenz, Mannheim or Frankfurt, dropping off our rental car and then taking the train to Munich. Mannheim or Frankfurt are direct trains, but Koblenz has one connection and is only an hour drive vs. a two hour drive. I need a flexible schedule since I don't know how long my husband's ring rental excursion is going to take. Therefore, flying is out. I'd also prefer not to drive the entire way as we'll be doing a lot of driving on this trip already.
Thanks so much!!
Don't have any answers, just talking points. What brand of car rental will be using?
The rental agencies in Koblenz are not by the station, so you will need to take a taxi to the station. Most are located north of the station a mile or two.
Sunday most have limited hours, so it will probably need to do a "blind" drop at a lockbox.
Trains from Koblenz take over an hour to get to either Mannheim or Frankfurt airport. You may be able to drive to the airport in that amount of time if traffic is not too bad. Maybe Jo will know the traffic situation better than me on a Sunday afternoon. Rental turn-ins will be open all day Sunday there. On average, there are two direct trains every hour from the airport station to Munich. Takes 3 1/2 hours.
Thanks! Very good info. We're renting from Sixt.
Yes, Sixt is on the north side of Koblenz and Sunday office hours are 10 am to noon, but they do have 24 hour drop off service. http://www.sixt.de/mietwagen/deutschland/koblenz/koblenz
