Best way from Munich to Interlaken?

Hi all,
I am looking for recommendations on how to get from Munich to Interlaken, keeping in mind costs and simplicity.

I will have a rental car in while in Germany. My plan is to return the rental in Munich since I am moving on to Interlaken (and then Milan from there) and I am aware of the inter-country fees when dropping rental cars off. Therefore I am looking for recommendations on getting to Interlaken from Munich, preferably by train, but all suggestions welcome.

Where are you going from Milan, Katie?

Is it the flight home or are you on somewhere else in Italy?

If you book in advance, you can get SparPreis (savings fare) tickets from the Bahn site for as low as 39€/person. That's for a trip via German Eurocity (EC) train to Zürich via Lindau, then Swiss Intercity (IC) trains to Interlaken Ost via Bern.

German rail tickets generally do not include connecting trains outside Germany, but for some Swiss connections, they do.

katie,

The quickest and easiest trip appears to be a Bus / Train combination. There's a departure from Munich Hackerbrücke at 09:18, arriving Interlaken Ost at 15:28 (time 6H:10M, two changes at Zürich and Bern). They currently show a Saver fare of €44 PP (using an arbitrary date). The Bus arrives at Carpark Sihlquai in Zürich, which if I remember correctly is close to the Hbf, but a short walk will be required.

The solutions which use rail only appear to be about an hour longer, and somewhat more expensive.
