Best small town in Bavaria to stay in?

My husband and I will be coming from Murren, Switzerland to Germany and then on to Austria. In Germany - I know Rick mentions Munich as a great city to visit. We don't really like big towns and prefer smaller towns, more local, less touristy, want to see castles and the countryside. We'll have about 3 nights and 4 days in Germany. We plan to then go to Salzburg and then leave out of Vienna. Can anyone recommend if we should stay in Munich and do some day trips? If we do that, what small towns would you recommend? Dauchau seems like a place we'd like to see if we do stay in Munich. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post! Oh - it's our honeymoon (2 years later due to COVID).

We stayed at Hotel Burgmeier in Dachau and took the train into Munich. We had a rental car. Getting to the concentration camp and train station from the hotel was easy. We enjoyed our stay there.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is not far from Munich by train but is closely located to many interesting sights, including the Zugspitze. It has great infrastructure for tourists, but still feels more like a smaller town. We stayed a week there and never ran out of things to do/see.

You're driving - right?

So rather than Dachau or Munich, I suggest you pick a nice small town that is on/ near your driving route from Mürren to Salzburg.

The viamichelin site calls this a 7-hr drive that enters Germany near Rosenheim.

So I think I'll suggest that you look into the CHIEMSEE region. Check these places out.

Prien am Chiemsee
Bernau am Chiemsee
Aschau im Chiemgau

Prien is a great base town that allows for day trips in every direction. It's also where you catch the ferry to Herreninsel (island in Cheimsee Lake) for a visit to HERRENCHIEMSEE Palace, which might be King Ludwig II's most impressive creation of all.

Check out this travel writer's information on how to visit. Scroll down a ways. He gives great advice on this place and on all of Germany.

Aschau is a resort town tucked up near the base of the Kampenwand, a great place to hike. There's a lift there and great views of the Alps from there. It's easy to get there from Prien. Or just stay there.

What you shouldn't do is feel locked into staying places that Rick Steves writes about. He only writes about a handful of places in Germany.

Burghausen Castle isn't that far from Prien either:
