Hi
We are from Canada looking to rent a car at Munich airport to drive towards Nuremburg area. Which sites are best to book with?
Thanks
I use Autoeurope. They are a consolidator that arranges the rental for you. I have found their prices to be better than I can find on the individual web sites of the rental agencies. Also, they have a 24 hour help line if you have any problems. I have only had to use it once, but it save me a lot of money. My advice is to read everything very, very carefully. Car rental agencies are getting stricter on accepting insurances that are not their own. For example, one company only accepted Visa credit card insurance for Canadians and Mastercharge for Americans.) Also, read what is included and not included. (There are usually road fees, etc that are not included and you have to pay at the desk. Some car dealers are also charging a fee for crossing a border. We have crossed borders every trip and this is the first year I have encountered that.) I feel Autoeurope does a good job of disclosing all that, but you need to read everything on their web site and the document they send you. Many people like Gemut (a family owned business that will arrange car rentals) I have used them, but the truth is they have always used Autoeurope to arrange the rental. It would be useful if you have individual requirements (want to add a second driver, etc). Also, you can used the Autoeurope.com web site to compare prices. I usually save around $50-60 by riding the train in to Munich and picking the car up there. They have always let me return it at the airport for no additional fee. If you are headed straight out of Munich to go to Nuremburg it may not be worth it to you to do that.
I hit post before I had added something. This September I have a 25 day car rental, Pick up in downtown Munich, drop off at Munich airport, with zero deductible insurance for $651.76. It is with Hertz. I have never taken the zero deductible insurance before. I have always bought travel insurance that had a zero deductible car policy included. It was always cheaper than buying insurance from the rental agency, and I got all the insurances with it. When I started doing my research for this trip,I noticed that travel insurance rates have really gone up and the car rental insurance has been dropped from $50,000 per rental to $25,000. Hertz offered a zero deductible insurance for $188.00 for the full 25 day rental. I took it. I do have travel insurance on my Mastercard that included $25,000 car rental, but I have never tried to use it and have heard some horror stories. (I did have to use my CSA travel insurance once and my claim was paid in full quickly) I felt the $188.00 was worth paying for peace of mind (As Rick Steves say: I can return a door handle and walk away). Germany is usually fairly reasonable priced for car rental. (last year, I paid $313.00 for a 6 day car rental in Norway...ouch!) I usually arrange my rental on the Autoeurope web site, but they have a fairly helpful staff if you want to call them to have them do it or ask questions.
