Best route to Andechs from Munich?

Hi, we plan to be in Munich in late March and would like to take a day-trip to Andechs. What is the best way (most direct) to get there from Munich without a car? Bus? Train? Thank you for your suggestions! Karen

The MVV website shows two routes. 1) The S8 (S-Bahn) goes out to Seefeld-Hechendorf, near Herrsching, from which you can take the MVV (Munich metro) bus #928 to the parking lot below Andechs. 2) The S6 S-Bahn goes to Tutzing, from which you can take the 951 bus toward Herrsching, getting off at the Kloster.

Either S-Bahn leaves the downtown Munich S-Bahn trunk line anywhere between Pasing and Leuchtenburgring. The S-Bahns run on an every-twenty-minute cycle, but the regional bus only runs once an hour, so the MVV website only shows the connection all the way to Andechs by bus leaving every hour, at approx 20 minutes after the hour (from the Hbf). Check with the MVV website for exact times from your stop.

A one-way ticket costs €8,60, but you can get an M-3 (five zones, M is two zones) Tageskarte (day ticket for unlimited travel through those zones) for €10,60 single, €19,60 for a group of up to 5 P. That covers both the S-Bahn and the bus. When I was there 13 years ago, the website showed a route including the bus going all the way to Andechs every hour. The S-Bahn was delayed by 20 minutes and the MVV bus was not there when I arrived, but there was a private bus (for a few euro extra) waiting for the train to take us to Andechs.

I've done this several times including just this past September and it couldn't be easier.

As Lee says, the most direct way is a S-Bahn/Bus route. This last September we went via The S8 (S-Bahn) to Seefeld-Hechendorf, near Herrsching, transferring to the MVV (Munich metro) bus #928 to the parking lot below Andechs. On the way back we just walked the forest path to Herrsching, grabbed a beer by the lake and rode the S8 back to Munich. We used the MVV app to pick which S8 to depart so it timed up with a waiting bus in Seefeld-Hechendorf.

In previous years we just rode to Herrsching and walked or biked to Andechs and back but this requires a little more effort as it is about a 4km walk.
