best (not fastest) route from Strasbourg to Munich?

I know the route that goes through Stuttgart is faster, but there is a southern route that goes through Donaueschingen as well that takes only an hour longer. Is there anything (scenic or otherwise) that should make us consider taking that way by train?

Strasbourg to Munich is 3 hours and 39 minutes with a single change in Stuttgart. Going by way of Donauschingen is 5 hours and 39 minutes, so it is 2 hours longer and goes via Ulm. You could travel via Kehl, Donauschingen, Friedrichshafen, and Lindau with regional trains and a train replacement bus between Friedrichshafen and Lindau in about 7 1/2 hours with a Quer durchs Land Ticket for 52 EUR for 2 between Kehl and Munich. Strasbourg to Kehl with a local train or Strasbourg City tram.

Yes, that much I already knew. I don't think we are in a hurry to get there, but if there is something along the route to see, we don't mind the 6 hour trip. I know it goes through the Black Forest, but it is significantly nicer?

Yes, the rail line between Offenburg and Donauschingen is scenic, with some loops and switchback curves through the mountains. Donauschingen to Ulm is nice as well, if not as dramatic.

Or stay the night in Waiblingen or Esslingen and visit both of these beautiful Fachwerk towns with towers and rivers and stuff. Both are near Stuttgart. Or go a little south of Stuttgart to the university town of Tübingen with the river, the hills, the beautiful centre.

There are so many beautiful places around Stuttgart I could go on.

Or get off the train at Augsburg and see that fabulous small city. Visit the Fuggerei and not only wonder at the first social housing but also the World War II bunker on the grounds which you can visit.
