Best hotels to stay at in Friedrichshain, Berlin, Germany

We are visiting our son in Berlin in September and doing a Rick Steeves tour of Prague and Budapest after. We would like to stay close to our son. He has suggested Friedrichshain, as it is the closest to his residence. I am reading that it is very lively and popular but noisy at night. Any suggestions?

Same! We will be travelling with 2 other friends. Our son lives in Berlin and we will visit him first. We need a hotel there. We are also planning on taking the train from Berlin to Prague on the 13th. My son wants to come along to see Prague. We need to find out the hotel we will be staying at so he can book a room Do you know?

I love Friedrichshain. It is a fun, safe neighborhood that still hangs on to a little of its hipsterism-vegetarian restaurants, clubs, and lots of cafes. I would definitely stay there, especially if it's close to your son. Berlin is massive, and while public transit is great, it can take a lot of time to get from one side of the city to another. I'm sure there are some nice inexpensive chains in the neighborhood.

Don't miss the Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park, which is not a far S-Bahn ride from Friedrichshain.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, our son lives across from the Soviet War Memorial. We visited there in 2011 and were very impressed with that memorial park. Any other suggestions for "can't miss" will be appreciated.

Barb,
We are on the RS Prague/Budapest Tour. The Hotel in Prague is the Hotel Metamorphis. We are arriving in Europe on the 6th. We are touring Kraków and Berlin. We will be in Berlin the 10-12. We are staying at the Myer's Hotel Berlin. Just picked it because it was listed in RS guidebook. We are also planning to ride the train to Prague but on the 12th. Looking forward to meeting you.

We certainly look forward to meeting you as well. Do you happen to know the hotel we will be staying at in Prague? Our son would like to book a room.
