I like the idea of staying in one place for several days while exploring a region, but without a car the Bavarian alps seems tricky. Is there a town that is strategically located for trains/buses to see a good cross section of the area? It seems that many of the train connections are slow, and I wonder about the local bus lines as well. Perhaps having a car makes more sense in this case, or staying in more places.
