Best German Xmas Markets in Western Germany - close to Amsterdam by train.

For 2022, we will be taking a YuleTide River Cruise Dec. 20-27 Amsterdam to Brussels.

We have been over several times, and done a few other Xmas Market Cruises along both the Rhine & Danube, but we aren't very familiar with the markets on the Western side of Germany.

We know most of the markets close around Dec. 23 and the family we are going with have never been to Europe and they want to see a German Xmas Market BEFORE our cruise starts --- so we are flying in Dec 15 for them to experience Xmas Markets before we take a train to Amsterdam to board our River Cruise.

My husband and I LOVE the Markets in Passau, Regensburg, Nuremberg and we considered flying into Nuremberg for a couple nights, but that is a 7+ hour train ride to Amsterdam and we'd love to find something closer.

Any recommendations for German Xmas Markets that would be a closer train ride to Amsterdam?

Bremen. Hands down one of our favourite markets in the area.

You could also base out of Hamburg for a few days. The markets here are so-so compared to the biggies, partly because of the lack of a true old town. However, it's an easy day trip to Bremen and to Lübeck, both of which are fantastic. Most locals do these day trips by train, which is super fun.

The Bremen and Lubeck Christmas markets sound wonderful as both cities have beautiful city centers and many other features to make them great to visit in the winter.

If you do go south a couple of hours by train I can also recommend Trier and Aachen in addition to the larger city of Cologne. There are some great cathedrals and Roman ruins in these cities as well as a beautiful backdrop for charming Christmas markets.
