My favorite towns to visit that are all within an hour of Frankfurt by train and are covered under the local RMV transportation tickets are these: Büdingen, Gelnhausen, Limburg, Marburg, Idstein, Eltville and Eberbach Monastary, Seligenstadt, Mainz, Bad Homburg with Hessen Park Open Air Museum and the Saalburg Roman Fort. Leave time in Frankfurt to go to the neighborhood of Höchst.

If you have not been to the Middle Rhine for a boat ride from Bingen to Boppard, you might wish to make time for that, even though it's a long day. Search this board for "Middle Rhine" if you like, top blue search box.

Having lived in Frankfurt as a child, I enjoy visiting there. I have an uncle and aunt who live there, as well as 3rd cousins.

We enjoyed the Archeological Museum. When we went there, we found that we had no money, and our card had been declined as we had been in Germany longer than 30 days. They would not take a credit card. A kind man paid our admission, saying that he wanted our stay to be fun. It's a very interesting museum, with a lot about Roman settlements.

There is the Cathedral. There are many nice neighborhoods to walk in. There are other museums.

We also ran into a simple street winefest, and enjoyed singing the old German song "Sweet Caroline" with other Germans.

As to trips within a short distance, there is Heidelberg, Mainz, the Taunus Mountains, the Romantic Rhine stretch (St. Goar), the wonderful monument to German triumph in the Franco Prussian war (Neiderwahldenkmal) where you ride a cable car to the top over the vineyards, and many other areas.

Frankfurt has a lot going on.

Hi,

If you want to the rivers Rhine and Moselle flow into each other from above, Deutsches Eck, go to Koblenz, ie to the Prussian fortress, Festung Ehrenbreitstein, built shortly after the final defeat of Napoleon., very historical in that region with towns like Kaub am Rhein, Bacharach, Bad Ems..especially that place.

Heidelberg would be a good choice. About an hour away by train.

Just got back from that area. If you want a day trip, Rhine cruise from Bingen to Bacharach, a long lunch there, walk around and cruise back. Second, Bingen to Eltville, take in the village then up to Eberbach monastery but have a slow lunch first in the stone and beam restaurant, it’s gorgeous.

Budingen and Seligenstadt are worth a visit but won’t take up all your day on their own. I did not care for Bad Homburg, limited to the downtown area and parks. Don't know about train times but Heidelberg can take up a day with its castle, philosopher's walk and downtown area.
