Best area Munich?

Looking for a great area to stay in Munich. We'll be there for five days in mid-Oct. Our first visit.

Years ago, on my first visit to Europe (a business trip) the company put us up in a small hotel in the Munich suburbs. It was a very traditional German hotel and they didn't speak English. I loved it and stayed there a half dozen more times. It was recently sold and turned into apartments, so I can't stay there any more. Last trip I stayed in the Altstadt (inside the old walls), and I will definitely stay there my next time; it's so close to everything. I haven't stayed here yet, at Pension Lindner, but I definitely plan to in the future. It's a good combination of accessibility and price for Munich.

Staying in the altstadt area (near Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt) will put you right in the middle of a very nice area. Staying near the train station is ok, too, but it can be a seedy area. I've stayed in both areas and won't ever choose the train station again because the Viktualienmarkt area is SOOO much nicer.

Haidhausen is a good alternative to staying near the Hauptbahnhof. It's a nice area with lots of good restaurants and shops plus still easy access to the s-Bahn and u-Bahn.

Check out hotels near Ostbahnhof, Rosenheimer Platz or the Deutsches Museum.

I also wouldn't recommend staying near the train station. We've done it twice. First time in 2006 and it was fine. Most recently in 2014 and it was pretty darn seedy and "colorful". I wouldn't stay there again.

I like the area between the railway station and the Theresienwiese where there are some nice traditional hotels and pensions. It's close enough to the station to walk to, if you are fairly energetic, but away from the sleaziness. By mid-October Oktoberfest will be over and the area will have quietened down and gone back to normal room rates.

We are staying in this hotel in August. I like smaller places and this appealed to me. It is close to the Nymphenburg Palace and a couple of beer gardens. The surrounding neighborhood looks very pleasant. The hotel has bikes that guests can borrow and is not too far from public transportation. We usually try to stay within walking distance of major attractions, but when I was researching more centrally located hotels, they seemed to be larger chain properties. I think the hotel sells tickets for public transportation, so it should be pretty easy to get around.

Jennifer_g, it sounds like you haven't been to Hotel Laimerhof before? We stayed there in 2014, first stop of our trip. Room we had was very small but we loved it. In a neighborhood so very quiet. The palace was very close. We ate at both the Hirschgarten and Kurgarten. Friends who lived in Munich when they were young came to visit while we were there and said the Hirschgarten is the largest beer garden and authentic. I heard no English around when we were there, it was good. At the Kurgarten I had some fantastic spätzle, if you get it the one with cheese was much better than just plain.

We also took a taxi from the train station and glad we did. We had just flown in and were tired (took train from Frankfurt). The tram station wasn't too far but with luggage at that time we were glad we just paid for the taxi. Enjoy your trip!
