We are flying into Berlin and want to travel to Detmold to see where family came from before we embark on our Viking trip. So far I have not been able to figure out how to get to Detmold without several train and bus connections from Berlin
. Anyone have an idea? Lynne
Train is 5 hrs 15 min, with 2 changes but that appears to be the fastest way to get there. You could rent a car and drive but that would take just as long and possibly cost even more. When are you going? Train tickets will be cheaper if purchased ahead for a specific date and time. Where do you have to be to embark your Viking cruise and how long do you have for this side trip to Detmold?
Yes, the train. It is direct ICE train to Bielefeld, then a connecting local train to Detmold. Unfortunately, they are working on the rail road tracks between Bielefeld and Lage(Lippe), so there is a train replacement bus over this stretch until October 14. Nothing to worry about. You just get on the bus at Bielefeld Hbf and it takes you around the construction to the next open station, board the waiting train, and continue on to Detmold.
PS - I am seeing 3 1/2 hours from Berlin Hbf at www.bahn.com. Travel time is unchanged from the normal service without the train replacement bus.
Thank you. We arrive Sept. 5 for 2 nights in Detmold then back to Berlin for our Viking trip.
FlixTrain is also operating train connection Berlin - Bielefeld.
Hi,
On my trip in 1984, I did a day trip to Detmold but not for the same reason as your plans indicate. This was from Bad Sassendorf/Westf.
